Help me with some cooling system advice.

Two questions... I am planning on replacing the head gaskets on my truck in the upcoming week and overhauling the cooling system with an inline Chevy t-stat.

First my Rover has been leaking coolant for quite some time. The leak is on the back of the engine passenger side and I cannot see it, only the trail leading down onto the front drive shaft. I figured it was the head gasket as I have seen many threads with descriptions similar to mine. But now when I look at the engine the leak or spot of clean caused by the leak seems to be much higher than where the head meets the block. It seems to be leaking from somewhere the same level as the valve covers. The back of the passenger side valve cover and the engine hoist bracket are shiny and wet looking. I have the parts I need to do the heads and I will soon discover the leak when I start the tear down but is there any other places where the leak could be that I need to pay special attention to. So far I have ruled out the two heater hoses at the firewall, the connection at the front of the intake seems good, and the throttle body warmer plate I am hoping maybe I can get by without removing the heads.

Second in regards to the inline t-stat mod. I have all of the parts lined up that I read about in the DIYs, but I have the older style lower radiator hose, with the heater and reservoir hoses molded in. I have an inline filler/overflow cap and I want to route the overflow from that to the current reservoir tank. So I am thinking I can delete that connection. My only problem is with the heater hose. What can I connect it to? Is there any fitting that I could pick up at a local parts store that would allow me to plumb the heater hose to the lower radiator hose or is there another way to tackle this. I want to get this done in the next few days and was trying to avoid ordering and waiting for delivery of anymore parts. Thanks!

Easiest way to find the leak is to pick up a coolant UV kit from autozone or something and then see what's glowing.

Mr.Popo,
I had the exact problem with my '96 DI. Coolant leaking frompassenger side bank in the back and dripping down and around the bell housing... With help from boards and primarily from @TigerDan (on NCLR and LRRF) we (he) determined that it was teh valley pan gasket that gave way and was the source of the leak. While my head gaskets may have their own issues (I have an oil seep from the area where they live :ack: ) Dan's replacement of the VPG solved the leak and it has been running great ever since. I did new hoses etc and it was good advice to re-snug the clamps after a bit of driving...

Hope this helps you as it did me.

Best, Tom

Hey, I did pick up a UV leak kit and found the leak from the back of the head and a little from the front as well but it was on drivers side. I have everything tore down but when I was inspecting and cleaning the heads I found three small nicks on the face of the driver side head. The indentations were shaped kind of like a fingernail, on one side and in about the center of where the cylinder wall meets the head. They were in the same relative position around three of the cylinders. One of the defects came very close to the water port and I guess was allowing exhaust gas to get into the cooling system along with added pressure resulting in the failure of the gasket. I can see marks on the gasket where the fire traveled around the defect, so I know I did not mark the head when I removed it. This has to be a factory defect or was done during a past rebuild. I am getting the nicks welded up then will have it machined back down. Has anyone ever see any defects like this before?

I have a leak in the same place, back of engine where I can't see it. My truck overheated a little driving cross country but I stopped before it got too hot. I parked the truck in my garage for the last 2 months and the leak is getting worse!! Resivore is still full but dripping constantly. I'm about to pull it all apart and do a gasket kit (with new head bolts and resurface) but I'm worried there's more to it. Why is the leak getting worse just sitting? While I have the head apart and front cover off (front cover leaks a little)what else should I replace? I've read a few threads and everyone has something different to say about what to replace. Sorry to dig up an old thread but I didn't want to start a new one if there's already some good info on an existing one.
