help starts fine, wont rev. up

Hey guys, help me out if you can. Its a 98 d1. it will crank up fine and idels fine, however it will not rev up past 1,500 rpm. it starts spitting, spuddering and backfireing.

It sounds just like it has jumped time, but I have never seen a boring old mod. engine jump time. Is this possible?

I have checked all the normal stuff like MAF, air leaks, exhaust not clogged, air filter not clogged, bla bla bla.

sounds very much like an unseated ignition cable butt plug

Fuel pressure is around 35psi. What should it be at??
