Howdy, all. Longtime 4wheeler, new Rover owner, checking in. Been lurking here for several weeks and thought I'd join the fun.

I just traded my Ducati for a 96 Disco SE-7. PO drove it down to Scottsdale from Boulder and picked up the bike. The rig appears OK, pretty dirty, stock, couple dings here and there, but not bad. ABS fuse is pulled and check engine comes on intermittently (PO reported usually when climbing steep grades).

Plan is to get it all cleaned up, lifted slightly, bigger tires and use it as a driver. Though it may be unpopular here, I don't plan on wheeling this rig. Hell, it would be awesome if I could use it to tow my rockcrawler ;) The Disco shares space with my first-gen 4Runner (ARBs, dual cases, 37s, bobbed, beat, 244:1 crawl).

Probably go the OME route for a nice ride quality and call it good.

First question, can I just unleash a can of engine cleaner under the "bonnet" and spray it down like I've been doing to my other rigs for years?

Good to be here, thanks for having me.

hmmm... I used to hose down my jeep's engine while it was running (something like _1_ electrical connection at the engine), but I wouldn't do it on the Rover.
What's wrong with steam cleaning?

That's my point. I've done that with running engines on every computer-controlled vehicle I've ever owned with zero problems. But I'm a little hesitant due to the electrical gremlins these vehicles seem to be plagued with.

What's wrong with steam? Nothing I guess, except I don't own a steam cleaner and I'd rather do the work myself.

Other thoughts. Am I overthinking?

I've done it with it running and with it off and no problems.. I was always just really fast with it.. the time I did it with it off, I used gunk on it, and did it per the instructions on the can.. I did it on a cooled down engine while off, sprayed with gunk, scrubbed a little bit, washed down with pressure washer actually, and i believe I had to wait a few minutes then start the car, let it run for a few minutes.

On the flip side of it, I know that JeffreyDV was cleaning his wifes D1's hood and it managed to start a small fire afterwards..

A friend of mine blew water past the timing chain cover gasket recently with a pressure washer. Water in the oil pan, and replacement of the timing chain cover gasket. What a fun thing to do...

I think you may be very disappointed in the Disco for towing duty. They can barely get their fat asses up a decent sized mountain, let alone pull something up a mountain. Unless you plan on dropping in a 455ci Pontiac

If your rockcrawler and trailer together weigh less than 3 or 4K lbs, you should be okay. You're not planning on taking that setup up Mt. Evans or anything, I presume.

BTW, welcome!

Actually, yeah. Just heard from Felix and he's zooming around Boulder on my old Duc ;)

Trailer/rig weight would be more in the 5k range unless I do some radical surgery on the Toy. I kinda figured the Disco would be something of a turd as a tow rig. No worries.
