High Mileage Wagons

We picked up an 03 VW Passat 4Mo in December & have been loving it. The V6 drinks a lot of gas though. Does not seem "cheap" at all but it is the nicest car we have ever owned. Tiptronic shifting is a nice feature.

It is the same platform as the A4 and feels very spacious in the back. Not sure if would with two car seats but our two dogs never complain.

When doing research to buy, the 4cyl turbo had a bad sludge problem and the torque converter has 2 seals in it that can go bad (which we are starting to experience).

Subaru duh who ever has trouble from them?

My dad had probably the only lemon Subaru ever built. New engine, transmission, etc. under warranty. FWIW, they never complained and just replaced stuff.

by a horse, you can legally drink and drive in those.

LOL, you just reminded me of the drunk idiot rode his bike right into the back of my disco, but in his defense they are a little hard to see. My wife came in yelling for me that a girl rode her bike into my car and needed help. So we ran out there to find this idiot laying in the road trying not to cry with a 12 pack of lost lake rolling around the street that "weren't his" and his response to me was a sniffling "Hey what's up?". He hit it so hard his shoes were still in the toe clips. He then tried to ride off but his rim was bent and wouldn't go through the forks.

I may have to look more at VWs, as I was looking at them I did see some nicer ones than what I have been in before.

Those of you with Volvos w/o problems where they the P2?

I know Subarus are nice but the wife does not want one at all.

I've also looked at some E320s but they are out of my range. I had a student that had an old MB wagon with 500k on it and it still ran fine.

Some Dude from Idaho - have you driven either of them, or it's all hearsay?
No, not hearsay. I have owned a pile of volvos over the years including several 240s, an 850, an XC70 and an S60. I'm currently looking for a 98 V70 FWD since I think that may be the best wagon they ever made.

Has anyone who's commented here on inferiority of a 4wd version owned one?
I don't think they're inferior, I think they're overly complicated for very little benefit. I like the simplicity of the FWD volvos and I personally do not feel like the AWD version added much to the equation as far as traction is concerned. I have made hundreds of runs up and down the mountains to go skiing in both the FWD 850 and the XC70 and I cannot say I thought the XC handled the snow any better.

Also, have you done an oil change on the AWD? What a pain in the ass.

Haven't done an oil change on the XC70 - she's only two oil changes out of the warranty!
Speaking of 850 (early V70) - parked next to one at Mammoth. Backed up from the spot and drove away - to see the 850's driver spinning the front tires forever trying to get out.

I've heard issues with transmissions and the T6 engines in the early S80's (which the XC70 is based off).

Idk how bad they are. Literally every other soccer mom in my town has repeatedly bought a volvo wagon. The 01 V70xc - 07 XC70 are everywhere. I've gotta say the XC70, esp the 05+ is a very pretty wagon.
