I wondering what it takes to come to these Rover events. I am new in the Rover World and well I have been reading some of these forums and I can't really tell. What are they all about? Also, I have a child, I am a single mom, so I really have him about 99.9% of the time. I really don't have anyone to watch him if I choose to bring him these events. Although he does participate in a number of activites that I do. He climbs, hikes, bikes and other stuff, so he is used to being out and about. TO FINALLY GET TO MY QUESTION....... Would he (being a child) and me (being a female) really be welcome at these events? They sound like a lot of fun. I am all about trying new things!

Hey Alice.. welcome aboard, and its nice to hear that you want to go wheeling!

As for events, there are many different types of events.. If you have a newer discovery, you can start off small and go to a dealership sponsered event.. they generally have them twice a year and teach you some basics in offroading.

Then there are always groups of people from this board who get together to go wheeling.. where are you located?

And there are also larger events, such as MAR [mid-atlantic rally in Virginia], where tons of rover owners get together to meet with one another, see vendors, and do a bit of wheeling..

As for bringing your son, that shouldn't be a problem.. I've gone wheeling with many people who have brought kids of all ages, and they seem to always have a blast!

Alice.

Join a local club. If the club is good you should feel welcomed. If you don't try another. Check the Resources section for clubs that may be near you.

I take my son and he loves it. Take him along and enjoy, most events are considerate of children. But, getting muddy is way over rated (LOL). It envolves too much cleaning- go rock crawling instead.

Hey Alice. Check the trails section. If you see something near you reply to it.
I've met some great people on the board here and everyone is willing to help along, share knowledge and coach you along through your first rides.
P.S. The single mom comment gonna have these guys on you like hounds, me included. Any pictures? ;)

Well that is a good thing, because I know he would have a blast. He is 4 but really digs stuff like this. I am in Alabama. North Alabama to be more precise. I would really like to learn how to do some wheeling the right way if there is a correct way. hehe. Plus, I used to own a Pathfinder which I worked on myself, BUT now the Disc is a whole different animal and I am having to learn all new stuff. Although I did bid on a manual on eBay and I got it. So we shall see.....it is all an adventure....which is fine with me! I will look at the calendar to see if there is something coming up but I imagine it is mainly in the spring that everyone gets out and does the wheeling around....?!?!?!

Ha ha Walter that is funny! We will see, I am not in it for the guys, the sporting and adventure part seems a little more appealing to me. Believe me I maybe a newby in the Rover World but not the world in general. As a single mommy, I have to be a little tough, so I am not too worried. Besides I have to set an example for my little man. Do you guys welcome most women like this.....lol! ;) Thank you though for the comments, very flattering! There is only one picture of me up on the web, thank God!

Thank you guys for your help and input. Chris I will check those sites out. Thank you. Let me know if you guys think of one in specific (an event) coming up that you would recommend. I am pretty much always up for a last minute trip granted the means (money and no work) are there.

Step right up girl!

Howdy and welcome! I went to my first rover rally on halloween and had a blast. Lots of kids there too. Met a lot of really great people, there are so many different folks that you are most likely to find a group that you click with. I met two super cool couples there and it seemed like I knew them forever by the end of the day. Hey, if I can fit in then anyone can! ;)

The Florida Land Rover Club is preparing for their big spring event and last I heard it was going to be in North Florida, so that might be close enough for ya to attend as well. Check them out at www.floridalandroverclub.com and hope to see you there!

Thank you guys for the welcome party. Stroud as for the alternator problem, no I did not. It is still making the noise and the tach still not working although I have narrowed it down to the barring (sp?) on the tension arm. I did bid on the manual and won. I think the guy was a little surprised that I was planning on fixing it. LOL. We will see how well it goes!

Welcome Alice. I have two sons, 7 & 9 and they love off-roading, and I've taken them to a few events. I wouldn't hesitate to take them to any I've been to, even MAR, it's just that MAR would require me taking them out of school for too long, so I haven't.
Mine started when the youngest was probably about 4, and I took him to the Solaros SAE event. Mine love meeting new kids and people, I think that's part of why they like going. At SAE, they want to walk around and say hi to everyone in the camping area.
So in a nutshell, don't hesitate.

Welcome Alice!
It's great to hear about another female interested in taking her Rover off road.
You go girl! :)

We have two girls (age 5 & 4). We started each of them on the trails at about 18months old. Our 4 year old loves it and is usually with us. While our 5 year is not very interested in getting dirty; so when it's available she'll stay with my parents. Otherwise she has to come as well.
(Believe me it is much easier on the trails keeping up with only one of them). LOL

When your looking into different clubs in your area, I would suggest you take your son with you. I know for us (as I am sure for you as well) how others on the trails/camp treat my kids makes a difference. It's also a HUGE relief when someone else in the club has a child in similar age. (Right Kai and Charles??? :) )
(Trail rides/camping when your child is the only one is not so deserible). I wish we had more kids in our club but not much I can do about that.

I personally think kids can learn a great deal from experiences of being in the outdoors.

I say, get out there and make some friends and have the best of time!

Best of luck to you and maybe one day we will meet up on the trails.

Melissa,

Thank you so much, I think... no I know that was the best welcome yet. That gave me a lot more ourage to go about this on my own with my son. Knowing that there are fellow parents there helps. He is only 4 years old but his first camping trip was at 6 weeks and then first climbing was at 2. I guess with everything my son and I do together this will just be one more adventure for our books. He generally does everything I do because he is with me so much. It is rare that I get a break so I at least try to do stuff that will relieve stress, along with him. He climbs, hikes, and bikes with me so why not this. My main thing is that I never want to take him somewhere that he is not treated well. So, with your statement about going to the Rover club meetings and taking him along... I totally agree, great idea.

Again, thank you, and hopefully I will see you on the trails. That would be great. I can tell you will make a great fellow mommy friend. Thanks.

Best wishs to you also,
AL

PS where are you from if you don't mind me asking?

I'm from the good ole' city of Houston, Texas! :)

To add to your post we do not generally take our kids with us to our HLRC meetings bc./ it's hard to keep them occupied and settled during the meeting. (We are part of other 4x4 clubs that we do take them with us to those meetings though).
It will just depend on how the meeting is set up that you go to?
I'm not saying don't take him with you your first meeting just go and fill it out. If the meeting is not the place to take him to then bring him along to other activties that the club has and leave the meetings for "mommy social" time. Also, look around the net for different clubs that might be in your area or check with the dealership or other independent shops. When you go to something ask someone there what type of events the club puts on.

Just some more tidbits for you....
