How do I test a Canister Vent Solenoid?

I'm trying to solve a lingering Evap error code (1496) problem and after consulting the Rave CD I think it may be the Canister Vent Solenoid. The problem is that you could tell me an ohm meter is a turkey baster with lights and I might believe you. I don't know a whole lot about electrical but would very much like to learn. Does anyone have any ideas. This is the unit tied to the charcol breather box on a '99 D1. It has a 2 prong connection that ties back to the ECM and has a red and blue wire coming in and a breather hose going out to the charcol box. Thanks in advance from me and Old Blue (she'd like to get back out on the trail soon so she can break again)

Tom, I checked it once - hooked the jumper wires with insulated alligator clips to the pins in the valve's connector, one wire went to the ground, and another - to +12V battery post (with the cable from ECU disconnected, of course). When the valve is open, you should be able to blow air through it.

I don't know what is the voltage rating for the coil in the valve - so if you do it, don't hook it up to 12V for too long.

Peter,
Thanks. I'm new to this problem but from my read, if this solenoid is bad then the ECU could be getting an EVAP leak error. Does that sound right to you?
