I was wondering how hard it is to replace the rear window seals on the ?94-?99 Discovery. I got an estimate for $200 for the labor to replace the rear door glass seal, and the two rear quarter window seals, but the parts were not included in that estimate. I?ve found the seals online, and they are not terribly expensive, but I was wondering if they could easily be replaced by a do-it-yourselfer? I would think the rear window would be difficult just because of its size and weight? Thanks in advance?

Hey Scott

i have a 95 DI and my rear side window seals are starting to crack, so i was thinking the same thing as you...

although ive never replaced them i have replaced a front windshield and rear window in my 65 mustang... it was definately a 2 person job BUT not terriably hard... albeit i think the job was made easier because you are able to rest both the windshield and rear window against the window frame. my guess is the side windows would be a lot harder cause you would have to have a 2nd person hold the window up in the frame.

in any event if you try to DIY please let us know how it was

When I was at the dealership parts counter, they told me that the cracks on the outside of the seal were only cosmetic and that the seal was still good underneath. The newer Discoverys do not even have the rubber on the outside. Does anyone know if this is true, that it is only cosmetic and that it should not leak even with the cracks in the corners?

If it is only cosmetic, then you and I may not need to replace them.

Thanks,

Jason

The seals are really easy to change out. Email me if you need specifics.

I sealed mine with silicone to buy time- cut the tip of the silicone tube small and at an angle to it slides right under the seal and put a bead all around the windows. Actually worked- no leaks, and the silicone doesn't show because it's under the seal.
