04 with 115K. Head gaskets done at 75K with a new water pump. I just drove it round trip to Va and will take it back again this coming fall.

'04, just turned 75k this morning.

Cylinder #7 is suspect as the spark plug is entirely too clean, white smoke on start up, little to no noticeable coolant loss though, compression's just fine, no oil in the coolant, no coolant in the oil. Valve cover gaskets and RMS are both pissing oil.

04 Discovery with 79,000 miles. Head gaskets done at 62,000. Replaced the water pump, fan and fan clutch, belt, idler pulleys, belt tensioner pulley, and had the front drive shaft rebuilt with greasable u-joints last month.

Brian as for your question about doing the HGs yourself it was not too bad to do. I documented everything along the way and had the rave handy on a laptop close by. It took longer to get the heads back from the shop than anything else. The SAI rail behind the engine is a bit of a pain to thread through at the last minute and breaking the drivers side rear head bolt loose but other than that not too bad.

'03 with 175,000. I did the HG's at around 140k. New radiator at 150k. At 170k the front cover developed a coolant leak so I resealed and replaced the timing chain since I was already there. Now I'm chasing a damn vacuum leak.

'04 SE7, 173 000km = 107,000 mi, other than usual SAI and ABS issues has been absolutely reliable. I've put nearly half the miles on this and it was dealer serviced until I got it, service history also shows no prior issues. Currently doing plugs, wires, rocker gaskets, belt and idler bearings.

03 with 100,00 on the clock. Curently rebuilding an engine to replace this one. The oil pump let go at about 85,000 or 90,000. replaced pump and water pump. This thing sounds like a steam train. So I am building a replacement with D&D'S cam kit, new rings and bearings. Oh ya, I also pined the liners.

03 with 108k. Heads have never been pulled and does not leak a drop of coolant. Just did a flush at 90k and its still full. Cross my fingers that I got a lucky one. Only real problem its had is the abs stuff.

Isn't this like bragging that you've never changed the oil?

It clearly states in RAVE that oil changes are not necessary. It is one of the reasons I got a disco in the first place. Doing the recommended top off with a quart every week or so ensures that the oil is always fresh. It is one of the greatest design features of these V8s.

That's probably why these things leak. No need to change it, just top it off, and as a plus you get automated chassis rust protection.

130K on the odo, still running on the original HG's. My transfer case leaks like a stuck pig, and my valve cover gaskets leak some what. Other than that, runs great.

It's funny how different everyone's experience is with leaks. Mine does not leak at all except in the GD sunroof.

Mine doesn't have sun roofs :) And the engine doesn't leak THAT much.... I think my honda leaks more.

I have a 2003 Discovery. At 69K miles (in 2008 my oil pressure light came on and I began researching. I found an internal memo where LR North America acknowledged the fault in the alignment of the dowel pins for the front engine cover causing the oil pump to wear away at the side wall and lose pressure. I filed a lawsuit against LR and used the proceeds to retrofit a 300tdi in my rover and now get close to 30mpg rather than 11-12 mpg.

My first 03 SE 7 lost the engine at 25k. My second 03 HSE7 sold at 85k. My latest Disco 96 has 201k just did the valley gasket and valve covers, all light bulbs except the dash inside and out, and freed up the CDL shifter Diff Lock works great
