Im new to the disco thing too but now Im F'ing lost I think Im miss understanding what everyone is saying here. Its my understanding on my 97 disco that the CLD is just another name for a transfercase?

Now am I rong that it has to be in HI all the time aka all wheel drive with the option of a LOW range for rocks and hill climbs? but that does not mean I have the ability to lock my front or rear diffs?

The disco CDL does not allow for 2 wheel drive but rather HI-N-LOW?
MY DASH LIGHT FOR THE 4X4 DOES NOT WORK AND I WOULD NOT KNOW WHAT IT WOULD LOOK LIKE EATHER WAY.:ack:

ok first off your truck is ALWAYS in 4WD. unlike some Jeeps and other 4WD vehicles your Rover is always in 4WD. 4WD does not mean that you have power to all four wheels by any means. without the truck having the CDL (centre differential lock) on your truck can possibly have just power to ONE wheel. when you LOCK the CDL you know have power split 50% in the front and 50% in the rear. now you have at least one wheel with power in the front and one with power in the rear. NOT all four.

you can't lock your differentials. a stock Land Rover has "open" differentials. lets say you get stuck in a ditch along the road and you have two wheels in the ditch (with contact and traction) and the other two are up in the air slightly or have very little traction. with the CDL locked you know you will get at least one wheel spinning in the front and rear, but in the situation i have just mentioned it will be the wheels with no traction. reason being is that an "open" differential vehicle the power follows the path of least resistance. ie. the wheels with no or little traction.

your CDL is part of your transfer case, but is not THE transfer case. the transfer case is what splits the power from the driveshafts and sends it to the axles/differentials/wheels.

the options you have with a CDL equipped vehicle are:

-4WD high (what you have the truck in all the time. pavement, rain, etc)
-4WD high LOCKED (used when it snows, loose gravel roads, etc)
-4WD low LOCKED (off road use in mud, rocks, hill climbs, etc)
-4WD low (slow speed towing)

you should have a light that comes on with you put the transfer case in any LOCKED position. looks like a little "H" on the dash.

make any sense?

ya that makes sence I've been 4x4ing for along time I just sold one of my jeeps to get into the land rover and its just a diffrent system than Im use too. I have always had air lockers or detroits in my jeep. I do miss it for its simplisity .
The land rovers have always had my intrest but learning all there systems and how the 4x4 handles off road is going to be totally new to me. With my jeep it was Point and shoot and with a 4 to 1 t-case and 4.88 gears with lockers and winches I was not to worried about geting stuck. I dont think the disco will disapoint me.

some of the Jeep systems are pretty much the same. you either have full time 4WD or part time (2WD selectable to 4WD). with the part time systems when you engage into 4WD from 2WD you have equally split the power 50% front and 50% rear. essentially the same as the CDL (locked) on a D1.

Wrong Swift, all D1s(made up to 99) came with a CDL High-Low lever, and D2s through 2001(stopped sometime that year) had the CDL/nipple on the tcase...

Sorry. I was a year out with the D2 (and loss of factory CDL) - Whoops.
Luckily I waited until 2003/4 to buy my Disco 2 and had the factory CDL.

Strangely enough the return of the CDL in 2003/4 wasn't worldwide. I had an 03/04 Disco 2 in Malaysia and it still didn't have the factory CDL lever. I didn't get underneath it to see if it had the nipple on the transfer case

Ah, yes..other than North America (and a few selected markets) the CDL came back with the 2003, twin-pocket headlight Discos.

Lubricate the top of the transfer case where the shifter comes thru. work it forward and a back and it will eventually shift correctly.

Im in Waltham Ma. If you want to swing by ill show where to spray the PB Blaster.....

Thanks for the great info. I crawled under my Rover and sprayed some penetrating oil on the linakges etc., and t worked just great. It took a bit to work the lever in the cabin, but it came loose and now I can shift into all four different options. Thanks again for your help.
