ZONE ZERO said:Im new to the disco thing too but now Im F'ing lost I think Im miss understanding what everyone is saying here. Its my understanding on my 97 disco that the CLD is just another name for a transfercase?
Now am I rong that it has to be in HI all the time aka all wheel drive with the option of a LOW range for rocks and hill climbs? but that does not mean I have the ability to lock my front or rear diffs?
The disco CDL does not allow for 2 wheel drive but rather HI-N-LOW?
MY DASH LIGHT FOR THE 4X4 DOES NOT WORK AND I WOULD NOT KNOW WHAT IT WOULD LOOK LIKE EATHER WAY.:ack:
ok first off your truck is ALWAYS in 4WD. unlike some Jeeps and other 4WD vehicles your Rover is always in 4WD. 4WD does not mean that you have power to all four wheels by any means. without the truck having the CDL (centre differential lock) on your truck can possibly have just power to ONE wheel. when you LOCK the CDL you know have power split 50% in the front and 50% in the rear. now you have at least one wheel with power in the front and one with power in the rear. NOT all four.
you can't lock your differentials. a stock Land Rover has "open" differentials. lets say you get stuck in a ditch along the road and you have two wheels in the ditch (with contact and traction) and the other two are up in the air slightly or have very little traction. with the CDL locked you know you will get at least one wheel spinning in the front and rear, but in the situation i have just mentioned it will be the wheels with no traction. reason being is that an "open" differential vehicle the power follows the path of least resistance. ie. the wheels with no or little traction.
your CDL is part of your transfer case, but is not THE transfer case. the transfer case is what splits the power from the driveshafts and sends it to the axles/differentials/wheels.
the options you have with a CDL equipped vehicle are:
-4WD high (what you have the truck in all the time. pavement, rain, etc)
-4WD high LOCKED (used when it snows, loose gravel roads, etc)
-4WD low LOCKED (off road use in mud, rocks, hill climbs, etc)
-4WD low (slow speed towing)
you should have a light that comes on with you put the transfer case in any LOCKED position. looks like a little "H" on the dash.
make any sense?
