:( i have a 95 3.9i disco and it some times idles like it is out of fuel, then other times the idle will rapidly fluctuate between 300-900 rpm and some times drop to stall. I am about to replace plugs/leads but any other advice would be great. It also smells as if it is running very rich.

Depending on the mileage on your Disco, you could be looking at bad Injectors, clogged fuel filter, fuel pump starting to go, or just needing a tune up real bad..

I'd suggest to replace distributor cap and rotor together with wires and spark plugs. Also you may want to run some injectors cleaner, or do whole BG motorvac at shop. And usual check up of vacuum lines and cleaning of IAC (stepper motor) wouldnt hurt either.

in any event, replace your fuel filter. its cheap and easy to do and can have a very dramatic results if its clogged.

then i would check all of your vacume lines for cracking (1/4" OD rubber tubing is VERY cheap to replace)... i was having some wierd idle problems... i started with the distributor vacume advance and then dbl checked ALL the lines that plugged in to any part of the intake system... this includes vacume hoses that plug into the MAF sensor and such. my 95 DI with 155K miles on it needed a couple of them replaced... no big deal cost all of $10

good luck

Injector cleaner is never a bad idea, ... if it's RedLine, ... the Chevron and others don't cut it IMO and contaminate your oil.

Check for vacuum leaks by spraying around the idling engine with starting fluid, be careful that stuff is really flammable.

I would suspect ignition parts also, any wires/plugs/cap/rotor issues, and probably consider O2 sensors.
