So I've been wanting to get rid of the tasco scope that came on my deer rifle when I bought it and move it over to my .243. I have two leupolds I am choosing from I've found locally, good prices. One is a VX-I 3-9x40mm and the other is the VX-2 (or possibly the older vari x-2, waiting on clarification) in 2-7x33mm. Which would you go with? The vx2 is about $20 more and I'm not sure on the magnification over the 3-9 but is the vx2 coating worth it? I usually won't ever shoot over 250 yards. It's going on a Win Model 70 featherweight .270.

Edit it's the vari x 2. The vx-I is NIB

Take them out and look through them early in the morning or late in the afternoon if the store will let you. I would think that the 40mm would be a better value unless that coating does one hell of a job. The coating should help with clarity and maybe light transmission, but the difference in objective size may outweigh that coating.

Their website says that both have the Multi - 4 -Coat system and the VX 1 has 95% light transmission. I'd say get that one. I don't use this brand, I'm just going off knowledge of scopes in general.

I have the VX-2 3-9x40mm on my .300 that I purchased several years ago. It has worked great in Alaska, Idaho and Wyoming hunting elk, mule deer, pronghorn and bear. The light transmission is amazing in all conditions. I was surprised on how bright things looked in the scope at dawn and dusk. I don't think you can go wrong with either one, but I would go with the one that has the larger objective.

What do you use? Leupold always has seemed to be a good bang for the buck.

Zeiss or Nikon - really good for the money. These two companies have more experience with lens making (high-end microscopes). I've compared several scopes side by side and these two are the best in my opinion for the money. Nikon has that BDC reticle that is pretty cool. Go to their web site and take a look at the video. If you only have one rifle and will only need one scope, I'd put out the money for a Zeiss Conquest. I've got 3 of these and love them!

If you want something that is not overpriced and works as well, try looking at the Super Sniper line. You would be surprised at the quality of if for how little they charge. You can look up all the reports on it over on snipershide and other sites. I have had mine on a 50, 338, and now on my 308. SWFA is who sells it. Just my 2c.

+1 on the Super Sniper , does not cost an arm and a leg and tracks true. Has target style knobs so you can shoot at a distance. Download Isnipe for your Iphone and you are set.

whats the price tag on the 3-9x42? It won't load up when I click buy it now? I might go ahead and buy this leupold and get one of these later towards deer season and switch the leupold for the .243 for my girlfriend to use.

which one are y'all shooting?

I'd stay away from the low end Leupolds. I don't think there's anything really wrong with them, they just don't offer much for your money. At right around the VX2 price point, you can get an "open box special" Minox ZA3 from Cameraland NY. The glass is pretty much hangs with the Conquest. To my eyes the Minox definitely has an edge on even the VX-3.

IMO Leupold has been coasting along relying on their reputation. Their excellent customer service seems to be the only logical argument that can be made for their inflated prices. It equates to a pretty expensive extended service plan though, if you compare them to the competition.
