So i lost my remote key a while back and have been using a spare that i made because i am too cheap to buy a new LR key with a remote on it.

Well today i put the spare into the door to unlock the car, unlock it, and when i go to remove the key, half of it breaks off in the lock.

So my car is permanently unlocked, half my key is in the door, and im stuck at work until someone can bring me another key to start the car.

I am so pissed off right now its unbelievable. Anyone know if taking the handle off the door will make it any easier to get out?

I'm going to try my garage magnet when i get hom but i doubt it will work.

looks like i'll be at the dealer tommorow getting a new key. Are they open on sundays?

Around here dealers aren't open saturday or sunday unless you need sales so forget the dealer on a sunday.

You need a dealer or mechanic with a testbook to synchronize a remote key, mine was about $50 labor at the dealer and $100 for the key at rover connection. I got one of those and ordered three DI keys off ebay for like $15, some will even cut those keys providing you know your key code number.

Hopefully you can find a good locksmith to help you out in retreiving the broken key fragment and getting you some generic nonremote keys as well.

had the same thing happen to me, fortunately I was at home. I got the key out but it snapped something inside the door and the cylinder spins around now.

The same thing happened to me on my sisters Saab 900. I took a pair of locking forceps I got from a hobby shop and ground them thin enough to fit into the keyslot, then sharpened the tips so they could slide past the key, once I felt it I clamped them down and it slid right out. Hope this helps.

It must be nice to have wireless internet access inside your rover - can you put the window down and just climb out??

(Sorry, I couldn't resist... :smilelol:)

I wouldn't call you cheap for having a key without a remote. I've got one key without a remote and 2 with a remote. The remoteless key is my most favorite. In my opinion, the keys with the remote on them are just too big and bulky.

Hope you get this solved quickly.

Best Regards :) Jamie, Blue, and Angel

take something small enough to fit in the key hole like a very fine screw driver or rod, put a tiny amount of super glue on the end but not so that you are going to touch the sides of the lock and touch it to the broken off part. it should harden pretty fast and carefully pull out the rest of the key.

Where is your dealer?? $50 to programwould be great!
I bought the spare transmitter for mine ($106 +tax ouch) but have NOT had it programmed.. the closest dealer to me (Haron LandRover in Fresno) quoted $100 just to program it... So I have the key cut to work in the door, just not working on the remote yet...

It was Bedford NH.

The programming was about that cost and then I had two of the regular DI keys cut (plus the remote one) as well as changing the computer over to "single point locking" (one push to unlock does the drivers door, and another to do everything else). They even looked up my radio lock code for me. Whole bill was something like $80 and I was expecting around a hundred ten so I was pleased. They even gave me a fancy gold Land Rover key chain/Fob with, of course, their dealer info on the back.

Pretty good dealer experience if you ask me. Only thing is one of the DI keys they cut didn't work so I chucked it, no big deal as I now have more than enough keys. Whole process was about an hour and a half because they were busy.
