Well the cigarette outlet was working but the cigarette lighter itself wasnt so I went to autozone and bought a new one. When I put it in it was really loose and when I jiggled it something blew because my headunit blew. So far all I know is that and my clock keeps resetting to one. I checked the fuse for the cigarette lighter and it looks okay but I havent tried replacing it yet. Anyone have a clue of a fuse that connects the two or anything I can check?

Update - well so far I know the headunit is out, the clock was resetting itself everytime I shut the car off but now its pretty much dead altogather, no dome light, and everything else is fine. When I first start the car I see the green lights in the tape deck flicker but thats it.

Sometimes headunits haves fuses that go into the yellow switched power wire or the red constant power wire. Pull out the headunit and check the fuses in the back.

You neglected to tell us which headunit you have. Is it an original or an aftermarket radio?

Have you tried using the cigarette lighter again? At least you can check if that circuit still works if it heats up correctly.

If your clock keeps resetting that means that the constant power wire (the red one in the back of the headunit) is not connected or the fuse went out. This is the wire that provides the small amount of current from the battery to the headunit so that it "remembers" the time.

Open your fuse panel under your steering wheel.

You shorted the wires in the lighter. A fuse is blown in the bottom row, if I remember correctly. Pull all the fuses and inspect each one, I had the same problem when my cig lighter was loose.

I have the oem headunit from a 97 Discovery and I have the cd changer. I tested the cig lighter socket and it doesnt work.

Actually, it would be the yellow wire which supplies constant power to the system for memory, clock and accessories.. You probably blew a fuse somewhere or actually melted the wiring behind the cig lighter leaving a dead short. If I am not mistaken, there are fuses on the back of the head unit as well... I can't remember as I pulled mine so long ago and replaced with aftermarket.

Well I checked the fuses, I had a blown 20 amp for the lighter which I replaced but that was it and it didnt do anything. I checked the one for the cd player and a couple others but they were fine. What do you guys recommend be my next step, I never realized how annoying it is not to have radio until you have to fight off the urge to turn it on. Any of you know what I have to do to pull the lighter assembly? I remember reading about someone saying you can just get under the lip and pry it out.

you also blew the one in the back of the head unit.

you need to pull the head unit and replace the fuse that plugs into the back.

if you dont have the tools to pull the head unit you can make your own in about 1 min.

take a file folder hanger from a file cabinet, the metal hangers that are in the paper are a perfect match for what you need. just tear them out and use the ends with the little hooks in the 2 slots on either end of the radio.

good luck...not a tough job

Well I just pulled the headunit which used allen wrenches and replaced the single 7.5 amp fuse on the back but I dont think it was bad to begin with. What do I have to do to pull the cig lighter?

Sorry to bump my own post but I thought I would sum up everything because Im really in a bind. Its a 97 Discovery with hk stereo. I stuck in a cigarette lighter and now I have no radio, the clock works every once in a while but always resets itself, and have no dome light. The tape deck lights up sometimes and today I managed to turn the radio on long enough to see it light up. I have checked every fuse in the two main panels, pulled the headunit and replaced the 7.5 amp, and am still not getting any power from the cigarette outlet. Thanks.
