For the time spent on the bracket design, could it not have been fixed?
One has to have some intimate familiarity with AMC V8 timing cover/oil pump.
The only aftermarket manufacturer of these timing covers is Crown Automotive, and they have various issues - like improperly placed bore for distributor, causing the timing gear to waste itself in a matter of hours, and poor casting.
Judging by the photos, the guy us an engine-cleanliness nutcase.
Here's a later comment on this thread: "design another tampon bracket for the rear main seal. "
AMC V8s have two-piece rear main seal design, it can be changed with only the oil pan off. And yet, I've remember battling the rear main seal leak for years.
A lot of good can be said about an engine that can run for a month with zero oil pressure. But, hopefully, I'll never own an AMC V8-powered vehicle again (short of that 1963 Rambler station wagon that sits in the nettles in one El Cajon backyard).
