I hate rovers (electrical problem)

I have a 95 d1 with electrical issues, any help will be appreciated, because I'm ready to go buy a land crusier if I can't solve this. I'm having trouble staying in love with this truck.

What doesn't work:

1. cd changer

2. the cdl, it will lock 4h like its suppose to, but won't move to 4L or 4L locked

3. the shift brake interlock, tail lights and moving the transmission out of park.

These problems showed up all at the same time. The shift brake interlock is caused by a faulty brake light switch, that was easy, but how it failed concerns me. The side of the switch that goes to the shift interlock and tail lights looks like it melted from an overload, not good. All fuses in truck are good, trust me I checked them all. All grounds are good, again I checked them all. Next the cdl, I used the rave cd to find that interlock relay 2 tests out okay, I think. If I run the test I can jump the interlock switch on the cdl and get it to work in 4H and 4L locked and unlocked. I get good power to the switch of the relay, but only 1.87volts to the coil part (the part that actuates the relay). Is that enough? Also my ohm reading for the interlock diode 2 is wacky, anyone know where that thing is? Transmission selector switch is okay, as is the transmission solenode and tranfer box solenode. Anyone know how to test the park/neutral switch? Also, whenever the truck is out of park the cdl warning bell goes off, kind like it was in cdl neutral. All the cdl linkages and such are in working order and fine, this has to be an electrical problem, as it was intermittant and I can overide the lock outs to get it to work. Finally the cd changer no longer gets power, started the same time the cdl stopped working.

Help me, I'm going lucas insane at this point.

Did you check all the header joints wrapped up in the harness in the dash? They catch rain that leaks thru from the windshield or HVAC, & corrode.

Yes I am alive! I wish I could say the same about the rover. :(

Curtis- I looked at a d2 today, kind of nice ... I might need you to talk me out of the dark side :) Of course they have even more electronics to go bad ... loving a rover is hard.

I'll try pulling all the connections related to shift interlock system and check for corrosion and resistence. At least I might be able to elminate that, problem is have you ever seen how many damn wire looms are under a d1 dash? More than I ever imagined I had to deal with before.

I can bypass it too, but the neutral alarm is going off. Trust me, you drive the truck for more than two minutes and you want kill yourself. I have tried to stop the alarm but can't. Pulling fuse 12 makes it a little quiter, but you can still hear it. I think thats what is pushing my rover sanity over the edge the most right now.

Hey Andy,
Sounds like you got a case of the Disco Gremlins.... I had the same problems with my Rover except my AC went out too as well as the other things you descibed in just one week. I am most positive the CD changer not working is a grounding problem. Do your dome lights flash when you open the door? The CD changer and door actuators share the same ground as I found out. Finding the ground is another story.

I too got fed up with this nightmare on wheels and ended up getting another rig. LOL.. :( I will miss my Rover but not the Gremmies! That little alarm would be like the Communist tourture of a single drop of water over and over again in the same spot on your head... yeeeooowww!! I can see your frustration!

If you LOVE the Discos to a point where you will put up with the hassle of maintaining, or rather fixing, the misc, multiple problems they have, I say get rid of the 95 and go for a DII. But if you can afford the Land Cruiser, no doubt go for that. The new DII's seem to have just as many problems as the DI's, just different. I don't care what anyone says, Discos are lemons. Yeah yeah, the best 4x4xfar, but only if everything works I say. That is why their resale is like 5% of the retail cost! Land Cruiser has a rep for reliability but will cost you up front. I looked at several LCs but were way out of my price range and I still owed on my Rover. I ended up with a 2000 Montero Endeavor (before they took everything away like the CDL and changed the body style to that Susuki looking thing). Thing is built like a Rover but not as heavy. I certainly will not use it to the extent that other guys on this board use their Rovers, but man, the reliability issue is worth it.

Good luck and I hope you solve your Disco woes... :(

RAVE disc is a interactive cdrom from land rover. It is the dealer service guide. Has all the manuals for any rover like the electrical trouble shooting manual, workshop, engine and transmission overhaul manuals. I believe atlantic britsh or rovers north sells it, so does the dealer. It is sold as model specific, I think, mine has all disco's. I'm borrowing a copy from a friend, so I don't know how much it costs.

The RAVE CD is a great reference tool, but will not solve your problems. Electricial especially. It will point you in the right direction, but you will need some background in electrical to solve most of the annoying LR problems.

Steve is right, the rave cd will only show where to look, not how to look. I've used it to run all the diagonstic tests for the shifter interlock system. All they told me is yes the problem might be here, but still no true answer. This truck might be headed to the dealer or shop soon, I can't find it.

What's the deal with all this anti-Rover propaganda?

If you Disco has gremlins, fine, come here and try to work it out. No need to espouse their faults and tell everyone to get a different truck.

I don't remember as many Rover haters on the old boards

I think we should all just have a group hug, and then charter a bus to the nearest Mitsu-shitsy dealership where we should each plunk down a chunk of cash on a rolling juke-box and a lobotomy.

Problem Solved!

Actually I do love my rover, but it's behavior really strains this relationship. When this happens we end up needing group theropy here on dweb and with friends and family. Problem is sometimes (like now) we need professional help and my health insurance doesn't cover 'theropy' sessions. I guess I feel hurt and betrayed by this break down, that's what is causing me to want to stray. But admitting your feelings is the first step to recovery. Maybe Marc's right, a good trip to Moab could give some good 'us' time together to reaffirm this relationship might be what the doctor ordered.

On to another issue, I tried a thread titled 'cdl electrical problems' and only one person looked at it. Title it I Hate Rover electrical porblems and well over a hundred have looked at it and got me good responces to try and solve my issues. I doubt anyone on this bbs will think I Love Rover electrical problems .

Anyway, the wiring harness's look okay as does the park/neutral switch. Anyone know where the shift interlock diodes are located, even with rave I can't locate them worth a damn. Could my truck have been built without them?
