Hey guys,

I am trying to get my climate control back into line. I just recently replaced my heater core and refitted my A/C System with R134 and everything came back together nicely. My heater works great and my A/C system took the charge and didnt have any leaks. The only problem is when i turn on the a/c from the switch (over to the snow flake) my compressor doesnt turn on. Everything else on the system works...fans inside the cabin, fans near radiator, and switches/levers all work properly. My first guess was the compressor relay.....nope. I ordered a new relay and installed in and still didnt work. So i did a couple of tests. I bypassed the relay bridged the #30 and the #87 connections on the relay and the compressor kicks on and gets the air really cold inside.

One of the two , the #86 or the #85 wires are bad is my thought. I tested all of the other A/C Heater relays and they are in good condition. So i looked at the wiring diagram and found that the #86 wire comes from the pressure sensitive switch/thermostat. I traced the wires back to a "voltage sensitive switch" (according to the 1989 year supplement in LR manual it is for the A/C system) under the steering wheel. It is a big yellow relay with only three prongs. part #PRC 4427.

Not sure if this is my problem but i am hoping it is. If anyone has any input on this problem PLEASE let me know. And if it is the voltage sensitive switch where can i buy one.

Thanks
Ryan Wilcox

There's also one or two switches on either side of the dryer. Jump them with a wire and see if the compressor starts. One of mine is bad, and I have it permenantly jumped until I can drain the system and swap out the part.

My RRC has a switch in the middle of the upper radiator hose that must be connected or the AC will not engage the compressor. I am not sure if the 89 has the same hose or not but the electric fan/coolant temp sensor is what it is.
