...on K&N, and I couldn't find ANYTHING on the DWeb about them, even though I know I have read a little on them here... go figure. Anyway, what I am wondering is do they perform they way they are advertised. i.e. improve performance and get your gas mileage to where it should be? That about when on extended off roading? Are they easy to clean?

Make more noise, let more dust in and can foul the MAF with oil if your not carefull.

Do not use:
More dust
No performance increase
MAF problems

Ditto prev comm,,,
I put one in & promptly blew my mass air. Inconvenient in a DII,,,damn expensive in a D1. I swapped back out for stock. Just change regularly due to dry, dusty climate.

I'm neutral on this. Straight from the box to the car. No problems. No noticable improvements either. But I won't have to buy another air filter though.

But you will be purchasing MAF sensors in the future.

How often do you change your paper element?

Put me in the 'yes' column.

I don't drive the vehicle in especially dusty conditions, so that's not really an issue for me. I've had one in my Disco for 50,000km with no problem. It was recommended to me by a local LR independent mechanic, and my dealership was quietly supportive of using it even while the truck was under warranty.

I've tried them in a bunch of cars I've owned, with widely varying results ranging from actually hurting performance (a BMW) to fantastic improvement (a Jeep Wrangler). Not always worth it. In the Disco, butt dyno noted a slight improvement at highway speeds, and that was about it. Confused by the noise comment above... I've never heard a difference. With CAI, yes, but not with just the filter.

I'd do it again, but it's not a miracle.

Well, I just took out the K&N & popped in a stock filter so haven't changed it yet.
I'm thinking I will change twice a year, roughly late April & late October (wheeling season)
What's the recommended mileage on changing a filter? I drive approx 20k/year so this would be roughly every 10k.

I run a Napa air filter replaced approx every 4-5 months.

As far as performance, I tested the K$N on 2 separate occasions at the dragstrip in Steele, AL. Once on my 67 GTO, the other on a 02 Trans Am. I realize its difficult to maintain constant variables, but the K$N slowed down both vehicles during full runs. I know others who have done similar tests and fail to show any gain. My opinion, if you are buying the filter for power, its a waste of money.

I wont "reuse" a filter of any sort.

I did, however, hear that K$N offers a high performance turn signal fluid.

My MGB with factory stage II dynoed slightly better when I used two large K&N's as opposed to the paper filters of about the same size. Mid to high rpm the torque and HP improved at W.O.T. and was good for 7hp at the wheel on my particular setup. In some cases they will work well, but even if it produced 7HP at 4500 rpm in a Disco- who cares? It's not worth risking the MAF.

you want better response and more power and some higher performance boltons, get som of this stuff.

Cross Drilled Brake Lines
Air Filter Bypass Kit
Piston Return Springs
Motor Block Oil Bypass Kit
Exhaust Filter
Hollow Spark Plug Wires, Avail. in chrome too
Camshaft Rotational Dampener

I can explaine what this stuff does for you if you don't understand. I gaurentee it will improve you Disco.

Jeg's has the Moroso titanium muffler bearings that are good for 12.3hp at the front left wheel only. More power available if you mount the tires upside down.

Just carrying around less pounds of air in the tyres does wonders... take 15 out of each and you're carting around 60 less pounds of dead weight.

Back on topic for a sec. Is there any safe way to clean your MAF sensor? I recently pulled a K&N out and went back to stock. I have read way too many negatives to take a chance for very little to no gain.

Thanks,

Mike

ps NAPA has some metric crescant wrenches on sale now :D

Whats worked for me in the past is to remove the MAF and spray the element with electrical contact cleaner.
