So I'm going to be doing some ice racing on Georgetown lake in Feb with a bunch of other guys, all 4x4 vehicles or all wheel drive. I was wondering that if I lock my CDL am I likely to go sideways if I start to loose traction? Do you think it's probably better to leave it unlocked?

I raced my Disco last year in Georgetown. Guess what... didn't roll it.

Couple things IIRC:

1. Vehicle must be AWD or 4WD - no 2WD allow. And yes, your vehicle has to pass a tech inspection.
2. If you install studs, you will be placed in the stud class - you won't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning the stud class with a street Disco. Stick to the street class using street tires - and (again, IIRC) Blizzaks and other specialty snow tires aren't allowed in the street class.
3. All the vehicles I watched that made it to the final rounds all drove their vehicles like they had stole them. I don't drive my Disco enough (second vehicle = toy) to drive it like I stole it. I tried and managed to spin out.
4. Get there as early as possible to get as much practice in as you can. I only got 1 or 2 practice runs in before eliminations - I could have used a lot more practice!

Will you go sideways - of course! You're on ice!!! The spot that I went sideways on was void of any snow - bad news! As the eliminations progress, more of the snow gets pushed off the course and exposes more of the ice.

One last thing - being that my experience last year was my first experience there, I was surprised how small the course is. This isn't a course that covers the whole lake. It's quite small in my opinion. As such, you aren't developing high speeds. If you do get sideways, you aren't going too far before you come to a stop. In fact, on the dogbone (my name for it) course, I was on the gas so hard (since I thought I still had a shot of winning) that when I crossed the finish line I began a full-on sideways slide into the deep snow off the course. Even the speed I generated didn't allow me to slide very far and there was no chance of rolling it, even though I did have the fear at that moment.

Have fun!

Thanks for the pointers. Yea, I drive by there a lot during the winter when I'm heading up for skiing and I see the guys racing on the lake and I really have been itching to give it a go. Looks like fun. I'm supposed to do it in the first couple of weeks in February, I'll see how I make out. Maybe I can get up there before and do some practice. Can't remember when it officially opens.

As for the CDL being locked or unlocked, leave it locked. Think 323 GTX or Audi 4000, same concept.....as far as the center diff goes at least. Just trying to figure out why one would want to "race" a Disco, but to each their own. Why not yourself an old beater Subie or Audi 4000 on the cheap and have all the fun in the world. Not trying to p*ss in your corn flakes, just being realistic, the odds of you rolling are pretty high.

Ice racing at Georgetown is uber fun. We used to do a big Solihull Society outing up there every winter, but we haven't done that in years. Maybe it's time for an outing in force .....

I too am a Solihull Society member and tried to generate some interest last year... without success. It would have been a lot more fun for me if I had known some other folks there. I did get to meet a mechanic who was intimately familiar with my Disco, as he was the one who did most of the work/maintenance on it for the PO.

I only went up one, as that was enough for me. I'd do it again for fun. If I want to win, I'd take my 4wd compact pickup up there. I was impressed with how well the pickups did... and again, partly due to the drivers driving them like they stole them (which is how I drive my p/u :) ).

Cheers!

Do they race Subarus up there?

We have an AWD Subaru Legacy that I was thinking about selling but it might be fun to go run it around the track a few times.

Edit:
Found that they allow them :D

Long time, no see Dave!

I was gonna add that the day I was up there, there were all kinds in the street class. I was waiting with baited breath to see a Subaru WRX go around the track... but the driver sucked, so that was no fun. There was a BMW 5-series (IIRC... those even come in AWD?) sedan there too. I was waiting for one of those low-slung sedans to get stuck in the snow off the course, but never saw one as they stayed on the more travelled paths.
