So I am totally envious of the discos I saw pix of in one of the rover mags- they are all running ginormous tires- are they doing the toyota coversion deal? The article did not go into specifics on how they got such big tires on their rigs. Is it only because of the ice and lava action? Is it a cultural phenomenon? How do they get into the vehicle? Maybe they are taller than americans.hmmmm

The reason for the huge tyres is for being able to drive on glaciers.
During summer most people will use a 38" tyre and winter go up to 44".
The suspension mountings are all cut off and rewelded on about 4" lower, then the bodywork
gets a trim and wheelarches installed. Invariably they also add lockers, winch, satnav, radios (comms), lights etc
This is one that was outside Gisslasson`s (Mr LR conversion) workshop

What level of stress on the axles these guys have? even with the big tires? I think they all have MD stuff...

From what i have heard they use stocker axles, and use MD flanges. Being that they are on mostly ice and snow there isnt that much strain put on the axles themselves. And yes you can bang around town with 38s and stock axles, they just start breaking on rocks etc..

They use ARB diffs and Maxi-Drive halfshafts etc
Only truly HD equipment, seeing as the middle of a glacier is the last place you need problems...
