IIA & III Parts Interchangeability

As many of you know, I have a very rusted and rotted out Series III. I have now found a Series IIA with most of the parts I need to make my III whole again. It looks like, aside from the bulkhead, most of the major parts will interchange. I even understand that the frame will work, with some slight modifications. My question is with the doors, and specifically the latches. My III has the anti-burst latches. Is it possible to swap the latches in the doors, and put the III latches in the IIA doors? I have not looked closely, but it looks like the rivets could easily be drilled out and the latches swapped. I also have a question about the sill channels. Not the sill covers, but the channel itself, that the floor bolts to. Are the sill channels interchangeable between the IIA and the III? My sill channels are in terrible shape, where the ones on this IIA are almost perfect, the galvanizing is just a little chalky. It looks like the parts on this IIA will make it worth the asking price, but I want to be sure before I spend the money. The S.O. has been a little cranky every since Smokey showed up in the garage, so I need to be sure I can utilize this IIA before I drop the coin.

Frame and Door Swap

Great find on the donnor truck. Almost all the parts are interchangeable. The sill pannels will fit witn no problem. Sounds like a great way to save some cash and get that Rover on the road. Check your email I sent prices for new and used doors. Give me a call if you need anything or need quick advice.

I think it is a toss-up! The IIA is missing most of the interior. It is pretty much stripped to the sheet metal. Before there is one complete Series, they will be both be torn down to the frame. I need to look at the IIA a little more closely, but I think it is sixes either way. I think this will be more of a conglomeration than a resurrection. It will be my drive train, all the way down to the axles (the II axles are gutted), but then it will be a lot of IIA body parts, with the exception of the bulkhead and front clip. On the tub, I will actually be drilling spot welds and rivets out to combine the panels to make one good tub (someone did a real hack job on the IIA tub bulkhead, so I have to swap them to use the IIA tub. In the mean time, I will make the III driveable and refurbish some of the IIA parts to prepare them to go on. In order to keep my living situation tolerable, I had to promise the wife that the III will remain driveable and the IIA will be promptly stripped of the useable parts with the remainder going up for sale (in order to keep the car mess to a minimum).

If it was me I would strip the IIA, get the chassis, firewall and rad panel galvanised (and the door frames if you are really keen), and start building from there using the best parts from both trucks.

That is basicially the plan, with the exception of the firewall, unless the Series III dash will mount to the IIA Bulkhead. I don't think there is a complete dash for the IIA, and my III dash is in pretty good shape. The IIA even has the wire "breakfast" grille. I really don't care for the plastic grille on the III's. I just need to be sure the III will always drive. There might be a day or two where the III may not be mobile, but can't be more than that unless I take time off from work to complete whatever project is preventing it from moving under it's own power. By the end of it, I should have one halfway decent Series.

I would be inclined to use the IIA firewall and windscreen frame. Both are a lot stronger than the SIII items (less inclined to stress fractures). The IIA doesn't have a dash apart from the instrument panel, and one of mine I made a new dash/I panel from 1mm aluminium and moved the instruments over in front of the driver. The SIII dash is a real PITA - too many thin bits of steel framework and backing to rust out. ANd if you don't galvanise the firewall you will regret it later (the IIA firewall warps less when it is galvanised).

The SIII dash will NOT fit a IIA bulkhead. The bulkheads are entirely different from the top of the footwells on up.
Yes, use the IIA bulkhead. Besides, you can open beer bottles on a IIA dash, that you can't on a SIII ;)
