Hello All,

I've got a '68 88" that I've done a frame-off rebuild on. I didn't touch the engine other than to clean it and paint it because compression is good and uses no oil. I've been considering some performance improvement options and have about decided on the following. Would like to hear input from whoever has an opinion.

2.5 L cam
Alternator
Exhaust header
More free flowing exhaust system
Weber Carb

Thanks

My personal opinion, based on 30+ years of series driving, most of that as a daily driver on road(including bottomless muddy spring roads in VT where heavy equipment would get stuck) and off road just for fun and also loaded to the roofline with hardwood and towing a trailer loaded too, I find the Series rovers to have a pretty well matched engine. I've driven stock Solex, Zenith and SU carb setups. Also Rochester and 2bbl Weber setups.
A stock carb in good shape is fine IMO. If you need a replacement, and don't want to spring for a stock, I'd suggest a Rochester. It adds a wee bit of performance, can be used with the stock air filter (best air filter going) and requires the fewest mods to install. The Weber requires a replacement intake manifold and won't work with the oil bath cleaner. Both are sitting in my garage.
For a header there is Clifford Research. I have one hanging on the wall in my garage. IMO they aren't worth the hassle.
Alternator -- AC Delco is an easy replacement and of the things you list, the most bang for the buck. I forget the exact model but a google search should turn it up. You can go up to around 80amp in the particular model line I'm thinking of. Depending on which chargring setup you have, you may need a new mouting bracket. I went with a 108amp Delco that required a little more modification, but wasn't too bad a job.

Good info, thanks, Tom!

I suspect the float in my Solex is bad/sticking. Does anyone know where I can get a repair kit and/or new float? Or is it not worth the time, and I should just get a replacement carb. I'd hate to throw out the baby with the bath water if that's what it turns out to be.

These springs made the biggest difference in the world.
Other than that I'm happy with everything else being stock.
The only other change if you have not done already would be converting to alternator vs generator.

I saw George in action at Crozet in the series. Impressive for a basically stock truck. There's not even a lift is it George?

Which weber carb? I ran a weber 1 barrel for ages. It was a great off road carb. Always ran no matter what. I switched to a rochester and noticed a significant performance increase. The rochester seems to put out a lot more power compared to the 1 barrel. I had to lengthen a breather line (or something like that) on the rochester to make it run decent off road. Once I did that, performed well off road.

For the exhaust, my best suggestion is taking it to the local muffler shop (not a chain!!) and asking for a 2" exhaust with a quiet muffler. I paid under $150 for mine and it helped out a lot performance wise and wasn't loud. I used to run a flowmaster series 40. It was HILARIOUS but way too loud.
