Re: Air Ratchet Torque?

I start at the lowest setting to undo my lug nuts and dial it up from there if they dont come off. I have seen guys at the tire stores sheer bolts off the hub using too much torque to try and get them off.

Re: Air Ratchet Torque?

an air ratchet will not remove lugnuts
i have the "super duper bling bling snapon" ratchet, and as good as it is, i would never use it to pull lugnuts off.

or do you mean impact gun? in any case, an airtool rated at 45lbs. in reverse isnt gonna remove much (beyond small 1/4" hardware)

i personally dont use an impact gun on lugnuts.
a breaker bar and an extension if you need more leverage.
but to answer your question, it depends on how tight the last person who tightened your lugnuts got them. some times even these aren't enought HP.

one word of caution never use just a impact wrench to put your lug nuts back on. always check them with a torque wrench, or at least your lug nut wrench

I *really* like the idea of a torque stick.

However.....

What size is a Rover lug nut?
At what torque should it be set?
Thus, the appropriate torque stick would be found.... ???

After back surgery it's the only way I can get the lugnuts off. The last time I tried removing them with a breaker bar I ended up on my back for a week.

I got one from a snap on truck when I worked at the dealership. It's a 1/2" drive rated at 100ft/lbs so i just attach the socket and go!

So you're using a different kind then, than the ones I've seen.

In the garage at work, they have a selection of them, that have the lug-nut-socket integrated with the torque-stick-shaft, as you see in that link that XD posted. I've not seen a torque stick that is "socketless"....

I'd emailed several distributors looking for the 1 1/16" size in a 95 or 100 ft-lb setting instead of the 140 ft-lb that I keep finding. I wanting it and a breaker bar thrown in the vehicle so that I could have the right torque on there after having to change a tire.

So, you're saying that Snap-On has a special version that accepts sockets on one end, and a breaker bar on the other, so that you just need the right socket to go with it? Got a part number?

100 is not enough for a Rover. Wheels come off at 100. Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's what the factory says; Those are the same folks that said 15K oil changes were OK as well. Those are the same folks who said a Rover was reliable. You can tighten them with a 40' post on the end of your sears ratchet, nothing is going to go wrong. Tighten them. Unless you enjoy chasing your wheel down the expressway, fuck torque wrenches.
