Impact Wrench

I need to change my front main seal. The crankshaft pulley bolt is torqued at 200 ft. lbs. and I'm looking for an excuse to get a new impact wrench.

My Husky wrench is rated at 300 ft. lbs., but that's a load of horseshit because it can't even break lug nuts.

So, is an impact wrench the right tool for the job? (I know it can be done with a big breaker bar and assistance from the starter motor, but as I said, I'm rationalizing here)

Can an impact also be used to put the bolt back on to torque spec?

I'd like to stay in the $250 - $300 range

If your impact gun can't break the bolt loose, use a breaker bar (with a pipe to extend the handle if necessary) and some PB Blaster to get the bolt loose. Then spin it the rest of the way off with the impact wrench. Use a regular 1/2" drive torque wrench to tighten the bolt to the proper final torque when you are done.

Impact wrench is great for all the spinning in between, but you don't need a new impact gun and you shouldn't use it for making final torque adjustments when tightening anyways.

Then again -- if you really want to rationalize a new impact gun - just go buy one for the hell of it.

I have an ingersol rand impact gun, can't tell you the model off of teh top of my head, but I've used it on that bolt before, just tricky getting the clearance to get it in. I also have a husky one, came free with one of my compressers. In my opinion the husky impact, and air ratchet are junk.

Hey Jeff, long time no see! W need to ride soon!!

Well, I went and got the IR impact. The thing is sweet! However, I couldn't get it to fit to take the crank pulley bolt off, had to use a breaker bar and starter motor. No matter, rationalization accomplished.
