Importing Two Defender 130's as Salvage?

I thought part of the deal they struck with the Feds required them to meet the 1993 specs that the NAS 110's had to meet originally. Part of that was the external cage- the Brits made fun of them, but the Feds here required them. The TDi was never EPA approved...

I was somewhat vague in my post - agree if you have the "5-door" SW version, the external cage would be required.

If though, you only have a "3-door" SW version, the cage is not required - at least what I've seen.

As far as the 300TDI engine, obviously they are legal as there are a fair amount of LRs with them installed by reputable companies. Must admit, they are addictive! Just amazing to drive around town or highway and not watch the fuel gage drop let alone the torque. They are noisy though.

I'll second the plug for Wallenius Wilhelmsen (www.2wglobal.com) - my 78 SIII just arrived on the Jingu Maru from Southampton, England about a month ago. Shipped to Charleston, SC for about $ 1,500 ro/ro and then transported by car carrier from SC to St. Louis for about $700.

I dealt with a Will Pocock at www.autoshippers.co.uk who made the export arrangements and with Ist Move International (in SC) for port and customs clearance. I imagine that 1st Move Intl, as a registered importer, could probably answer any questions about bringing in the spares for parts.

If they are imported on a bill of lading versus an export document, they will never appear as vehicles. When one goes to title the rebuilt vehicle, the bill of lading and bills of sale for the parts can be used to substantiate the provenance of the now-vehicle.

It is really much easier than many would like to think. How else are so many of these vehicles being imported?

There's a TON of newly imported ex-MOD Defenders in Canada. Most are still too new to bring over. They were going cheap too- I've seen pics of solid ones that sold for $3K.
An imported 93 110 will work IF you add the external cage and covert to a smog-legal 93 petrol engine.

Any web site for reference?
