Infamous knock...

The knock gremlin has set up home somewhere in my engine. I've read pretty much every thread related to knocks.
So this is what I have:

I'm using RP 10w40.
Oil 44 psi at idle when cold. Seems a bit high but it drops to 28 psi once it's warmed up. Reving the engine gets the pressure up around 48-50 psi.
Knock is there from cold. Not as loud but it's there. The knock goes away as revs increase.
Don't know if it was ever overheated. Changed the head gaskets about 6 months ago. No sign of liner slip with the heads off. The liners were flush with the block and the gasket looked ok (but I'm not an expert) except for the leaks from the rear water passages out the back.
No coolant loss since then.
Banged on the cats no rattles. Manifold bolts are tight and the y-pipe is tight.
Probing around with a stethoscope I can here the knock on both manifolds. Less on the drivers side.
Listening to the oil pan and the knock is very noticeable without the stethoscope. With the stethoscope I can narrow it down to about the middle of the pan just in front of where it drops down. From RAVE it looks to be around where the oil pickup bolts to the block.
The strange thing is I can also hear it on the exhaust pipes just in front of both cats but nothing from the cats.

So what's the next step. I've heard/read of people tearing the engine down, rebuilding and still knocking.
Doesn't sound like rod/crank bearings because the psi is good.
Slipped liner? No coolant loss or overheating.
Wrist pin or piston slap?

Is it worth droping the pan for a look and what would I be looking for?
Liner hitting the crank, polished cylinder from a slaping piston, loose oil pickup?

Any pointers or suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

I chased a noise/knock for a bit...tried Marvel Mystery Oil and it's been gone to this date. It surfaced around 50K and now have 97K and still no knock.

just dealt with the same thing in a 3.9

added 2quarts of diesel kleen to the oil and let it idle for about 20 min

changed the oil with some 15/40 rottela

and the knock got worse:banghead:

2 days later the knock was 100% gone:applause:

I think alot of these phantom knocks are stuck/collapsed lifters, thats what this one sounded like.

getting a strong solvent working can help free up the plunger is what I am thinking.

granted this is only a guess but hey I I did just luck out and have this one go away...we will se how long it stays away now.

Probably lifter noise. Run a engine flush, or Risolone. Drain the oil and refill with a good Euro spec 5w40 or diesel grade oil. Rumor has it Royal purple has moly solids in it, while it reduces friction on metal to metal contact, I wonder if it may collect and build up in the hyd lifters and slow oil flow.

I've been chasing a knock for the 10,000 miles. Replaced all lifters, tore down rocker assemblies changed timing chain and gears, dropped pan and inspected all piston skirts, cylinder walls still had the cross hatching, checked main bearings and connecting rods no signs of cam walk and the cam looked real nice put it all back together and it's still there. Assuming now that it's a wrist pin hope you find out what yours is. And of course I'll keep reading threads in the hopes someone else has same issues and solves it!

These lifters are notorious for being sticky. I also run the Rotella 15w40 and MMO. Noisier than hell on a cool/cold morning but fine after a little warm-up. No noise on warm mornings.
