Got offered a 4.2 from a LWB. I wanted to drop it into my 1995 Land Rover discovery but did some research and haven’t really got a good answer if it’s just “plug and play”

some say you need to change the flywheel and “chip the ECM”

has anyone place a 4.2 with a dizzy into a 94-95 disco ?

Not sure about the flywheel but the motor is identical including the sensors. I am sure that some people run 4.2 ECU in there 3.9s. If you give me a week I will swap ECU s and see what happens. My D1 is a manual so it might be a little funky but we will see if you want.

Except for the serpentine belt system. That is definitely different now that I looked. The 4.2 is a multi V belt for the accessories. Your disco is a serpentine belt drive. I switched 4.2 to the same serp belt as the disco. So you will need some parts from your 3.9 like the front cover with the crank driven oil pump and all the accessory brakes you already have. But everything else is interchangeable.

The flywheel shouldn't matter. It's not reading any CPS info. I have a 4.6L GEMS in my 95 D1 and I just swapped over the front cover, and misc hardware that needed to stay. I have a 4.2L ECU just for kicks. It ran like a beast until something in the rebuilt 4.6L decided to fail. I think it's got a stuck lifter sadly so going to tear into it and look around but the swap was nearly PNP minus just matching up 14CUX stuff.

I don't think you need anything if it is a 95. Definitely don't need to "chip the ECM."

Take everything you need off your 3.9 and bolt it to your 4.2. It's a super simple bolt-in swap.
Make sure you move your 3.9 fly wheel/flex plate assembly too. There is a chance that she shims behind it are different than the 4.2.
You don't want to dislodge the TC by not having enough shims or crack the Trans oil pump by having too many.
