Inline Thermostat Modification No Good?

I'm installing a new engine and radiator. According to my scan tool the current setup is running wicked hot all the time. I ordered all the gear for the inline t-stat mod with a 195*F t-stat. Now I'm being told not to do the mod under any circumstances and that if I do it I will have all sorts of catastrophic problems. Any thoughts?

I did read the description and operation of the cooling system in RAVE and it would seem that doing the mod will mess with the heating circuit.

Should I continue to use Dexcool or would now be the time to switch to something else? If so what.

I probably don't know enough but the inline mod doesnt seem to do anything other than trick the truck to run cooler. the truck has a pretty sophisticated system for staying cool, assuming everything is working properly

Who said there would be catastrophic problems with the inline thermostat mod? I've had mine running that mod for close to 10k miles without any problems.

If you hack and half ass the mod it could be bad, if you do it right you'll have no problems. As far as the t stat housing goes I bought 2 Chevy housing's and bolted them together, its only $15.
Use green coolant

Green coolant it is!

Is there any reason not to do the t-stat mod? I was going to replace the factory t-stat and hoses anyways. I was under the impression it would be an improvement, now I'm not so sure.
How do the mod hold up in cold climates?

I have the inline setup with a 180 t-stat...I like mine. And have had no problems, gas mileage is the same....don't seem to notice longer warm-up but them I'm in FL. I'm very happy with my 183 idle temp and my running down the road temps at 186-189.

You seem to be looking for problems. We can't hold your hand. Either do it or don't. Or go ask Mike what to do.

Not offended in the least. Just don't give a shit if you do this or not. I'm sure you've read my posts on this over the last couple years.
It works great for me but as I've stated before the reason I came up with this mod was to solve what I considered and engine that ran way to hot for my comfort zone.
Others disagree and feel 225 degrees is just fine for them.

I have read the RAVE section a few years ago about the possible affects of high water pressure on the heater core. I call that BS in my opinion but time will tell.

I really believe that Rover designed these things to run hot to clean up the emissions on an engine that has been over-built for its 40 year old design.

I always come back to this thought. The D1 has in all aspects the same engine, similar heater core; but has a traditional thermostat at the top of the engine. All the inline does is mimic the D1 system. Do D1 owners have heater cores blowing up? No they don't.

As far as some people having an engine running to cold. I really believe they have done something wrong with the install. Wrong fitted thermostat or something that keeps the thermostat open all the time. Thats all I can figure. Your engine needs at least a 180 thermostat and don't bother with high-flow racing thermostats. They react very quickly and need a higher flowing water pump. No one makes a high flow water pump for a Rover. Just use a standard Chevy thermostat. The more expensive the better.

When I first installed I used a high flow thermostat. The temp would swing from 175-205. Never constant. With a standard thermostat my engine is alway real close to 190.

I live in Oregon and spend alot of time skiing on Mt.Hood and can say on a 20 degree day I get plenty of heat within 5 minutes of driving.

As stated before. This mod works for me and I am happy to share my findings. Should anyone else do this mod. I really could care less.

I am doing this mod this weekend. I pretty much replaced everything in the cooling system and was still getting temps from 208 to 226 idling in 45 degree weather. I can't imagine anything more "catastrophic" than slipping the liners from overheating. Which has happened to me 2 weeks after I bought my Disco 6 years ago. This is my 2nd engine in my Disco and I've spent 2 years chasing a ghost on why it runs so hot at idle. This is hopefully the final fix and I can't wait to see the results.
