Intermittent ticking/tapping whe engine warms up

Hello all,

I finally got this 1996 D1 road worthy and its running smooth, brakes are perfect. But now I notice, a ticking, tapping sound while stopped or driving slow. Heard both in neutral and in drive...the engine has to warm up to hear it start the noise.

Can any of my fellow DiscoWeb brothers share some insight? I am hoping for some good news and not some bad engine issue - I have been working on this for two months.

The engine is a 4.0 GEMS

Thanks,

Mike

I had 15w40 in my 95 until it got crazy cold here, the I put in 5w30 and I heard that same kind of ticking. It seems to have settled down after a bit and warmer temps, but I'm going back to the thicker oil in the Spring.

My suggestion was going to be switch to Rotella but sounds like you beat me to it. I had a noticeable decrease in valve noise after switching.

I did replace all of them - what am I looking for in #8?? Leak in head gasket? Coolant, Oil? I noticed that the prior owner never changed #8 and #7 and they were a different brand plug than what was in the rest. I replaced with champion plugs.

Its running well - I do see on occasion a couple of small drops of coolant down below on frame cross member - but I can never find the origin.

Check the overflow reservoir hose to make sure it's tight and the rubber isn't cracked (or the clamp hasn't chewed through and created a small tear).

Sounds to me like a dirty lifter. Until the oil warms up the lifter will go tick, tick, tick. However, once warmed up the noise goes away.

Three options - get an engine flush and oil change, replace your lifters, or live with it.

My truck makes this ticking on really cold mornings, until she warms up. On warm days she is fine, so it may have something to do with the oil viscosity also.

Regards,

M.
