Intro and help me shop and fulfill my irrational desire for a Disco

OK, so I am finally now seriously in a position and ready to take the plunge and what has the reputation of being a horrible piece of junk. I don't care. I have been in lust with these darn things since I saw the first pieces on the Camel Trophy (I suspect I'm not the only one) back in the 90s. I have researched them on and off for the last 5+ years and I think am somewhat savvy to the platform. I finally just joined a few days ago now that I'm finally going to just do it.

I ended up being a Jeep guy when I got done with school and went down that road. When in grad school I did one of the harder trails in the area with a Disco 1 and thought the thing supremely cool (first time I saw one in the field). However, all those stories about someone's brother's monkey's uncle who had one that caused world hunger have always scared me away- even when I had the time to wrench all the time.

Well, fast forward to now, and with 2 kids and 2 large dogs, my 4 door Wrangler Rubicon just simply isn't big enough. My wife has a RRS SC (with the Jag drivetrain) and despite me being terrified of it when we got it, I get it now. I MUST have a Rover of my own. I want to write a check for one and only lightly modify it as I'll be keeping the Jeep for heavy trail duty. The prices are such that it should be quite easy to do these days.

This will be a true mall crawler for the most part, but I'd like a nice rack on top to put the roof top tent on, and carry the dirt bike on a hitch carrier to take me to places in comfort. I'd like to keep the MAX for acquisition to $6-7k, and then a couple or so grand more for modifications (rack, lift, tires, and possibly a few other bits), and from what I've seen this is quite possible.

I think I've narrowed it down to my #1 choice being an '04 DII based on being able to add the CDL (despite my non-need for supreme trail prowess), and the bigger engine. I am thinking #2 choice would be a '00 or '01 (if the VIN range is correct) again for the CDL and probably a good bit cheaper.

I know the economy is embarrassing (a blown 500+ hp fire breathing monster like my wife's gets better mileage), it will leak some or all of it's fluids like Ed Snowden leaks secrets, and will be slower than my Jeep. I've read about Chevy, Steve, and Martin wreaking havoc, headliners that look like my 1 year old's diapers, front driveshafts that try to pole vault the machine, and leaks of natural fluids from above through the star gazers. Again, I don't care. They are just too cool, and while fuel is relatively cheap, and these can be had for incredible prices, it's an itch that is ready to be scratched.

All this mindless babbling said, am I looking at the correct years for the correct reasons? I guess it should be said that I'm 6'7", and some have cautioned that I might be pushing my luck on fitting. If a comparison can be drawn to my wife's RRS, I fit perfect with the exception of needing a couple more inches of headroom. According to what I've found in spec, I'll get just that in the Disco, so I just need to confirm legroom, but all the years on the track with cars has me comfy not being able to gangsta lean in my vehicles.

So then, anyone have a line on a straight example? I'd really like a good runner as I don't want to bother with an engine transplant just yet, but mileage isn't that much of an issue as long as it's fairly squared away.

Thanks for reading and any input is greatly appreciated. My apologies for being a noob.

Forgot to mention, I'd really like a rust free as possible example, which I think keeps me relegated to CA and Southwestern machines. I'm fully willing to do a fly and drive for the right machine.

If you want to find a good example of a used truck, you might check with some of the reputable vendors on this site. I'd start with Elias Christeas, who runs an indie Rover shop in LA called World Proven. He's sold some amazingly well-cared for trucks over the past few years. Call him up and tell him what you want. If he doesn't have it, he might be able to get it.

I am partial to the D1 over the D2 (there are zealous fans of both, each for different reasons, and as many pages of threads comparing the two on here as you care to read), but since it's largely going to be driven on road you may prefer the D2's improved pavement handling.

Spend a little time behind the wheel before you buy. I'm 6'4" and one of the unsolvable challenges of Disco ownership is that the top of the windshield is relatively low. I often find myself hunched over so I can see down the road better, and have learned to tell when traffic lights change by watching their reflection in the hood. You'll fit in a Disco alright, but the visibility might be frustrating. If you want the best choice for a tall guy, hop in the L322 Range Rover (2003-2012MY). Prices are pretty low on the earlier ones, but the ease of working on them in your driveway is nowhere nearly as straightforward as with a D2.

Just a tid bit to your thread, you mentioned adding a cdl to an 04. It is the only year of the D2 that came with a CDL factory.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks, guys. I PM'd the one from that ad, so we'll see.

RE: D1 vs DII, I have read a good bit on both and understand a good bit of the differences. To be frank, I like the dash and controls layout of the DII better. Make fun all you like, but I'm strange about that, and I like the "newer" layout. I do like the departure angle of the DI better, but as this won't need to be nuts for trail work, the extra room of the DII will be appreciated.

In terms of visibility, that's actually a lot of the reason I want one: I love the low door sills and exceptional view provided. As for having to lean over for traffic lights and the like, I got used to that about the age of 16 when I got my license. :) But it is good to know. I'll have to find one locally just to go sit in and see just to make sure, but good food for thought nonetheless.

Hoping I can find one fairly soon so I can make use of the ease of winter travel for my first real winter in a few years...

Welcome to Dweb! (I'm Ray_G over on Expo).

While I can't fathom your preference for Dii's.... (kidding, mostly), it looks like the one Nick pointed out is a solid option.

You will find Dweb to be far more...egalitarian. By that I mean I'm just another a-hole on here, among a lot of a-holes.

That said, this site is the repository for any issue you will encounter in a D1 or a Dii; bar none. It has happened and likely was answered a decade ago. The biggest issue you will find is when you search you will see a bunch of other posts telling people to search, best to look deep into the archives first and work back closer to now (in my opinion).

Good luck on the hunt!

Yeah I saw that BaT one. Looks pretty solid, but we actually brought back a Mercedes 300GD from living in Europe, so we already have a full EU spec original vintage diesel to have to monkey with.

Ive been chatting with the guy with the one for sale, and MAN it really is pretty much what I'd like (save the bigger engine, but whatever). Only bummer (for me as I know they are desired as such) is that it has no sunroofs.

Can I ask my first productive question and ask if the sunroofs will be able to be opened with a Safety Devices, or Baja Rack? If they don't, methinks I may have found a winner already. Sheesh, that was simple.

The short answer is yes, depending on the version of the rack. Both companies (or SD, at least) make variations of their racks for trucks with and without sunroofs.

I prefer not to have sunroofs.

Ya. Nothing good can come from cutting two big holes in the roof.

Why did you drive a Disco 1 on a trail and decide you want a Disco 2 ? The two trucks are pretty much different.

But if you have decided on a Disco 2 I think you should take a look at the truck being listed in the trucks for sale thread right now. Cause as these guys have mentioned it's a great price for the truck and its ready to hit the trail.

I have a D2 with sunroofs and a Voyager (SD clone) rack. I like them but I wouldn't let it be a deal breaker and to be honest if you have them and want a rack it's gonna stick up about an inch or two higher than the standard.

I figured the hard core crew would really tell me that it was a hero machine for not having sunroofs. I know I'm a dork and a bit of a masochist for wanting them, but hey I want a Disco in the first place so I'm already a glutton for punishment.

But thank you for the reminder that the sunroof friendly version of the racks will be that much higher- a good point and definitely worth noting. In addition, on my wife's old car when we put a bike rack with a basket on it and I opened the sunroof, the noise was REALLY bad. I have to believe the same would be true with the Disco.

I really wanted the rear one in particular as I thought the kids would think it fun to look out, but if I have a rack up there, it's going to negate that benefit to a degree.

And thus the analysis paralysis I've gone over for many years of never getting one. Grrrr...

But getting to trail work, it most likely will never see difficult work- certainly not to its capability- as I've got a Rubicon that is mildly modified and I've had it through the Rubicon Trail a couple times. So in terms of needing a trail machine, I already have a heck of a machine for that work.

So we've left it that a buddy in LA is going to check out the truck for me and get a bit more serious.

Thank you all very much for the input- it's a HUGE help.

The rear passengers in a Disco are already enjoying the best seats in the house. It's stadium seating, so they have an excellent view even without a rear sunroof. The alpine windows add a lot - maybe not in terms of visibility but in terms of light and spaciousness.

My roof rack mostly obscures the rear sunroof and it's no loss. I should just seal it shut with silicone but it hasn't started leaking yet. The Disco gets pretty tall with a roof rack.

Good luck with the LA option. If I was in the market for a D2 I'd consider it seriously.

Thanks! We'll see how the looksie goes today on the non sunroof one.

So in doing more research, it seems the 4.6 was added in '03. Is that correct? My concern, though, is that year had some major issues with the motor, yes?

I know it can't do the CDL out of the box, but with a bit of work (seems swapping out the T Case) it can be done. If there aren't any particularly glaring reasons, would it be dippy to look at an '03? There are a bunch more of them on the market- and I suppose there is a reason for that- but it could make my intro more rapid it seems.
