IPOD connections

I've performed the search over and over. I have a question for the gurus out there. I know that there are no pre-98 D1 adaptors for adding an ipod to a factory hu. Are there any other cars/trucks that have the same head units/systems but simply stickered with thier respective manufacturer names. I'm asking because I can't find an adaptor but hoped for example that a 96 VW jetta had the same system and DenisonUSA or Blitzsafe made an adaptor for the Jetta-therefore allowing connection of IPOD. Keep in mind, the Jetta ref is used as an example. I want to beat this IPOD thing without installing another hu or using the tape/fm mod.

It SEEMS so simple. Find the left and right input wires from the hu to the changer and fabricate a connection for the IPOD. Key word is SEEMS...
I read the RangeRover article about it.

Thanks for your help.

Basically there is no good way to hook up an iPod to the stock headunit. There is no good interface adapter out there right now that will work with a D1 or D2. I ended up buying a new Alpine CDA-9855 headunit for my D2 along with the Alpine KCA-420i iPod integration kit. The sound quality went way up just with a new headunit. You dont need to get that expensive of a headunit, there are many cheaper Alpine headunits that work with their iPod kit. Check ebay, you could probably get a full Alpine system (headunit + iPod adaper) for under $300 or so, which is just a bit more than most of those iPod integration kits for factory stereos cost. It is very easy to mate an aftermarket headunit to your stock system, just search for one of my threads about my install.

I know very little about cd changers or iPod connections to the same, but I know there's a little more to it than just taking the iPod output and splicing it into the cD changer's input on the HU. The iPod connections I've seen allow you to change tracks, navigate playlists from the HU. For the sake of simplicity, I say you replace the head unit with a new unit from Crutchfield (or your favorite retailer) that allows a direct connection to iPod.

I'm not looking for fancy controls. I'm looking for a line-in for the ipod. I'll change the tracks, etc. Thanks for the replies.

there is an itrip, that you choose a radio station and it plays on that for like 23 dollars on ebay

They work, but they sound heinous. A slightly better option is the cassette adapter. A bit messy. Better is to wire in a simple male mini-phone plug and use the ipod's headphone output. The key with any of these to getting the best sound is to set the ipod's volume control at about 3/4. More distorts, less sounds muddy.

www.griffintechnology.com has some interesting solutions. The cassette adapter is called SmartDeck, and then they have a couple of FM transmitter solutions.

Another approach: If you want to keep the stock hu, pull it out, take it to a good elctronic repair shop. They should be able to open the unit and wire in an aux-input. Now, no knowing if your stock hu provides aux-input or not, they may opt for the cd interface as the in-line feed. I upgraded my stock hu and hard-wired my iPod with the aux-input.

i did what bruce did, and if you do a search for Ipod in this forum, you'll see photos that i posted.
i went w/ a new headunit that was satelite ready and had rca (AUX) plugs in the back of the unit.
then hardwired the ipod through a Belkin DC power adaptor which is mounted under the passenger seat (i got rid of that useless factory 6 disc changer) and mounted my ipod in a Belkin cup holder mount in a D2 cup holder. nice thing about doing it this way is the ipod charges while it's connected.
to date it's one of the best mods that i have done. :D

Go to www.installer.com
As for the Alpine unit, my wife's car has one, neither of us like it. The interface is slow, and toggling functions is a pain.

i went with the new alpine unit that is ipod compatible. used the ipod interface thing and rewirede the speakers and butchered the factory harness to get the power wires i needed.

all i can say is haveing the look at the ipod to get the songs is soooo 2004. i was using the FM modulator thing and i coudln't easily drive and change songs. with this new unit it is so nice now and not as dangerous.

think about doing the direct solution rather than the work around. i think my i spent $500 for the alpine + ipod input 2 new speakers ans installation. not too bad i think.

I'm not entirely sure about the D1 but I found an adapter the plugs into the cd changer wire on the D2. It gives me two sets of RCA input ports. Works great, just had to lose the cd changer.

If you can figure out which are the Left right channel connectors to the HU then you should be in business. Somewhere out there there is a web site where someone published what each connection does after they opened up a HU. www.roverville.us might help
