Is 100$ too much for a junkyard D1 steering box?

If the vehicle is worth repairing I'd contact Will Tillery and purchase a new box. Most old boxes are guaranteed to be leaking unless it is a very low mileage vehicle.

I paid $20 for one from a 1999 D1. About $50 is the most I'd gamble on a used box, unless I was getting it from someone that I knew would stand behind it if it leaked. I was converting from manual steering to power steering, so I didn't have a good core anyway and I figured $20 was less than the core charge, so it was worth the gamble, and if it leaked, I could send it back for core if I bought a rebuilt unit.

Dan, the one I got from meridian or whatever was only 2-3 times that, and it was a fresh rebuilt unit
I've got 3 or 4 rebuild boxes from Meridian. They all kind of suck - not terrible, but by no stretch great.
I wish I had time to invest in swapping in constant-ratio 76-series Saginaw box.

I've heard that as well. Luckily my experience so far has been good. About 30k on it since install and no weeping yet; even being constantly vibrated by the deezel

All rebuilt steering boxes are junk IMO. I would rather have a used factory one than a replacement. I put 8 on one Disco in Va at the dealership.

No, I've never done it. My understanding is that most people are unsuccessful when they try to rebuild them. Considering that remanufacturers can barely get it right, I doubt an at-home mechanic could either. I really have no idea what's involved, but that would be great if you could do it successfully.

Drew must know how to rebuild them considering he was modding them 15 years ago!?

Where would i find this kind of steering box? I have more time than money for sure.

Junkyard. Any full-size jeep (Cherokee, Wagoneer, J-truck) will have it, along with many (but not all) GM fullsize cars and trucks.
New one can be had off eBay for $200 or so. It mounts on the same side of the frame as in a Land Rover.

Modding them for hydro-assist? I've done that. That is a simple matter of pulling the snap ring on the round cap, and pulling the top of the box off where the bleeder is. I don't think he rebuilds them. At least I've never seen him do it.

I think the real issue is the Rover front facing pitman arm.
Most GM had rear a facing pitman arm, except for some models like Safari Vans.
I have no FSJ in my local junkyard to look at. I will do some internet research.

I'll get down to the garage later today and report.

Confirmed - the box is all the way forward in the frame, with pitman arm facing aft.
It may only be a matter of cutting a square spline on the pitman arm, though.

If more time why not give the seals a try? If you take the time to look manual procedure appears to be rather straight forward. Seal replacement is not considered a rebuild. You could then report back on experience/difficulty/success. Price is right too.

The difference is between something questionnable to begin with, and something that just doesn't break.
That applies to proper power steering pumps as well.

That said... I've been told more than once that the same boxes and pumps rarely fail on Defenders - simply because the lines are longer and the fluid has a chance to cool off. A couple of feet of copper tubing may do wonders.
