Is it a sin to drive a Disco and not offroad it?

Is it ok to own a Disco for street use only?

So is it a sin for someone to buy a Discovery and not offroad it? After being on this site a while it seems like the definite answer is no. I have a 97 Disco and honestly dont have the time or ability to do so. Is it wrong to buy a Disco because its cheap, good in snow, towing, and when push comes to shove will get through anything. So whats your opinion?

If your not offraoding it why live with 12-19 mpg, you may as well by a Freelander or some other "sport- cute" I guess the safety of a 4500+ vehicle,is a plus.

it's a silly waste of money and space as well as being environmentally irresponsible when a minivan or station wagon would do the same job better. what sorts of things are you shoving through? does mad max setup road blocks on the way to your mall? AWD cars, wagons, etc all handle snow better and the disco's towing capacity isn't that great. there are options out there that don't take premium and get better mileage that can tow the same.

i'm not saying i don't take mine to the mall because i do (roadblocks notwitshstanding) but i like wheeling and i've always liked the LR brand (of old, it seems :( ) so getting a disco was a no brainer. but i would feel guilty if i didn't wheel/primitive camp with it. right now i'm so sad because right now it isn't running and i just see it as a waste.

Disco's that aren't off-roaded, provided they are well maintained, provide a good source of lower priced, good shape, used vehicles for those of us who do off-road them. :)

All the above are good enough reasons to own a Disco. I don't question much about how someone uses their vehicle except in extreme cases like a low rider jeep.

try taking it to your local gravel pit area. I bet a few little camelback hills and a shallow water creek crossing and you'll be hooked. do a search for your local off road club and you'll never be the same....

All depends on the realites of the user - the wifes disco never gets wheeled however its slugged along towing trailers with wrecks on it and returned great mileage - last trip was 1200km towing 7000lb returned on $165 bucks of gas - couldnt be arsed to work out the economy compared to a car frieghter, but for the wife if it gives her the confidence to deal with the freezing rain & snow that the jetta and former acura legend got stuck at the bottom of the drive then to me its a winner - only thing i loath is the cargo space makes her spend more :)

There's a lot of people who point the finger and say SUV this/that but the bottom line is deep down we all aspire to buying something because it ignites a passion from when we first sat over the seats asking our dads a million questions or being able to spot a car by the shape of its marker lights it is not a ultility item like a yard tractor - mind you even mine has chrome hubcaps! but seriously when driving becomes like that 'Johnny Cab' in Total Recall - count me out im already planning dropping a Rover 4.2 into a BMW 533 i have because its about the 'drive' not about practicalites or boring stuff like economy - lol if any of my 6 cars or sportbikes etc were practical id be a boring 39 year old fart driving a prius - i think in essance it is a personal statement you project out there to the same ethos of putting on a good Armani rather than a Sears suit lol thats if im ever clean enough from fixing stuff to wear it lol

Mine can hardly make it around the block without something going wrong with it. I think I would have some sort of major catastrophic mechanical breakdown taking it off road.

my 97 was under 6k bucks with less than 100k miles on it. an exhaust manifold, 3 fuses and some better tires are all i have put into it. granted, my cruise doesn't work, but that is all that doesn't work. we tow my race car with it, haul the family everyday in it and go play in it a couple days a week. even if we didn't go play, it would still be the right rig for us.
