Is the power steering pump dead?

95 Disco I. The power steering pump has been making a rattling noise for a week. Yesterday it starting belching fluid from the pump outlet on the "pump to box" pipe. I tightened the hose and the leak held -- for about 30 minutes. I notice now that the leaking is not coming from the hose coupling -- but from what looks like a lock nut or something on the outside of the hole. The hose is a brass pipe with a O-ring that fits into the hole. The hose has a brass nut that tightens. The leak is not there. The hole on the bottom of the pump has a much larger (at least 23 mm) nut around it which I never noticed before (and can't get a wrench to without tearing it apart more than I want to).

Opinions? Any chance that tightening the larger nut might solve the problem. I also wondered if the O-ring could have gone bad but it looked okay and the leak is not coming down the pipe -- it is seeping out the side of the above described larger nut. This pipe is less than 6 mos. old but was not a Rover part (Atlantic British).

Or is the rattle noise the "death rattle" of the pump?

the rattle is probly the bearing. i'm on my third pump because of the bearing. word of wisdom, its MUCH cheaper to find a used one and install them 3 times than buy one new one. ebay, car cannibal, or even junkyards.

The rebuild kit costs less than $100 Oz, comes with seals, beaings etc. I've got one to do next week on a blokes TDI. Way better option then a 2nd hand one almost a stuufed as yours.

Bruce I don't really have any info, I just ring M.R automotive at Redcliffe here in Brisbane and the send me one over same day on the courier run when I need them. Like I said I have one to do next Friday so I'll see if there is a part number on the package when I get it. Not sure if it's an LR part or something Dwaune and the boys put together themselves. I think they get most of their stuff from BMI ( British motor imports) they are a major aftermarket Jag and Rover part importer here in Oz parts are always LR or OEM. I'll try and find a link.

Try this, I'm pretty sure this is where the boys get their stuff, but they only used to sell to other suppliers and not directly to the public or trade, but I think that has changed. I don't bother I just deal with M.R as they have most stuff on the self and I get it same day for not much extra $. Normally take 2 days from BMI cause they are in Sydney
