Is this something I should have looked at?

I was changing my gear oil yesterday and while down there contemplating world peace and other serious issues I noticed this. Now I know almost nothing about cars, I would guess its the power steering (go ahead and laugh if I am way off). Does this need attention?

Looks "normal" Peter. Possible Power Steering leak (hoses/factory crimp style clamps are well known to leak) ..Mine does it too. Melissa 1998 D1

Hey Melissa,

My school plays your school this weekend and I'll have you know I feel confident that our LaCross club team could beat your LaCross team. As for football well lets just say it would be the biggest win in Oregon football history. Chances are that it will be our biggest loss though :(

Hey Peter -
I had a leak develop in that area about a month ago. I couldn't diagnose it properly so I took it to Portland Land Rover - they said my steering box was kaput and replaced it.

I didn't notice any change in the driving behavior before or after. BTW - I have a DII and can't be certain from your undercarriage shots if that is a DII or DI. Not sure the layout is the same.

I was getting a couple of small drips when parked, otherwise I'd never have noticed.

Did they do it under warranty, or you paid for it?
My box started to leak at about ~80kmi, it leaks the same at 153kmi.

Melissa is correct it is the 99 SD 1. I will go and take a look a little more carefully to see if I can't find the source. I think I would be more worried if I DIDN'T have wet spots under the car it would mean I haven't changed the fluids in a while :)

BTW the ducks have a tendency to play to level of their competition (although I don't think they can get to same level as OU) like Michigan last year they played out of their minds then the next week they lose by 50+ points to WSU (pathetic). It might be good but my money is that I'll be working on the disco by half time.

Hey Peter M -
It was covered under my extended warranty. Total cost was just under $1k, of course that was at the Rover dealer so you can be sure it was *fully* priced.

I had about 53k miles on it.

Chances are its your hoses, I got custom ones made for $60 in Portland. However now my actual box has a leak

Oh yea, GET RID OF THAT FRAM FILTER....they suck.

Try a mobil 1 or K&N especially because of the upside down filter design, your rover will benifit from the anti drainback valves both these filters have.

You call that a LEAK!!!!!????

You don't even need driveway protection!
Call us when you have a REAL problem!!!

Seriously, though, it is your Power Steering. Check your hose clamps and hoses. Also check your level. If you are losing lots of fluid, you might want to replace it. If not, I wouldn't worry about it.

Just an FYI, the anti drainback valve in oil filters is to prevent them emptying when a filter is mounted horizontally, like on a VW diesel. It's not an issue at all on ones pointing straight down, and very little of one in this case.

An easy way to tell is if your oil pressure light stays on for a little while after you start your engine. If it does, it means your oil filter is empty at startup. At least as it relates to the need/pressence of an anti drainback valve.

Which brings up oil changing. After an oil change I always crank my engine until the oil light goes out before I start it.

I was wondering if someone was going to comment on that Fram. It is a POS. I usually run the K&N but went cheap last time. Then I read a long article on oil filters and gerneral crap that is Fram. Thanks for the help I really appreciate. I will be changing the oil sooner this interval because I went cheap last time (didn't really save me money  )

I will look over the PS hoses and clamps. Other than that I have found that by wiping up moisture with a shop rags makes it appear as though thing are as good as new!
Thanks again,

Peter
