When I get around to getting a second battery I am planning on getting one from http://www.hellroaring.com/.. I have heard a few good things from folks that have them. Of course I haven't really ever heard anyone say that their "x" brand battery isolator is a piece of junk..

edit: Their website hasn't been updated since 2004 so they might not be in business anymore though.. Although, Bill (GBR) hasn't changed his in years so you never know..

I'm sure you won't like it because I have one- but I like the TJM IBS system.
Just don't get one that is diode based- the voltage drop is significant. Any of 'em with heat sinks are the 'bad ones.' You can even make one using a 450-500 amp solenoid and a switch- wire it so when the ignition is on, the solenoid switches to bridge and when ignition is off, it disconnects. A manual override switch for winching and you're into it for maybe $50.

Why do you want to use an isolator?

If that is what you really want then the ones made by Sure Power are good.

Where did you guys get the TJM Ibs system, I cant find it but it definatly looks pretty interesting.

DAP sells them... I think Steve got the 1st, and I got the 2nd.. i'm not sure if he has more in stock but you could give him a call to find out. Very nice system with a relatively easily install process.

I always keep one in stock- installed another one for a customer Saturday... I think I have pics. It's been a popular item.

The surepower one is not a solenoid- which means no moving parts. Their efficiency claim is BS though- there's probably over a volt drop going through that box. NOT a great setup. At least if a solenoid fails you can just move the wire to the other terminal and bypass it until you can get another one. Remember- if an isolator has heat sinks, it's losing your power- in the form of heat generated. Diode based isolators usually suffer a 1 volt or more drop.

The AB one appears to be the Wrangler one. It's basically a solenoid with a three way switch.

If you guys wanna group buy on the TJM, I'll do it. TJM has a minimum allowed advertised price, so I don't think I can post the discounted price- but I'll work up something if you want. The TJM one has voltage level indicators for charge as well as each battery individually... better display than any other I've seen.

if the price is right on the group discount of those TJM ones I would definatly be interested. Where are you guys mounting those displays?

What's wrong with a simple marine Guest battery switch? No voltage drop, postive connection, start a pair of 400HP diesels with no issues. Can't imagine it'd have trouble with a Rover with a winch.

Nothing wrong with a switch- that's what is in my D90. Nothing wrong with the cheap bastard $40 solenoid and a switch either. Depends what you're looking for. I factored in the three voltmeters and mounts it would take and the lack of space- then determined the TJM is what fit my preference. It's alllllll good.

I used a Sure Power Smart Solenoid to connect my batteries. Sorry for the terrible pictures all I had was my camera phone.

Isolators seem pretty useless to me unless you have two completely separate battery banks that you need to charge from one source. Like if you had a trailer with a couple batteries.

I like the monitoring capabilities of the TJM thing. Do they make something similar that only monitors?
