So I'm going to pull my valve covers to inspect further. What should I be looking for to diagnose a bad lifter, push rod, rocker arm, etc?

Yeah, I know. I've got all the parts to replace the gaskets, studs, and nuts. Just need some time.
Previous question stills stands.

I would do the gaskets, then do an oil pressure check, then a coolant gas check before I tear stuff apart.

Get a engine stethascope and listen around until you figure out what is making the noise.

I've heard the sound and thought it was a lifter at first also. Without having the truck in front of me, it's hard to pin-point the noise. Try the method Two Cold mentioned. I've done the same with a piece of steel rod.

On a side note....I was on a motorcycle trip this past weekend with a few friends. One of the guys starts complaining about lifter noise. After about 2 seconds of diagnosis, I found the loose flange on the exhaust header. A quick tightening and she was purring like a kitten!

Moral of the story...yep, it could be an exhaust leak :D

I agree with Dan on this one....if you cant tell a difference between lifter or valvetrain tick and an exhaust leak then drop your truck off to someone who can tell the difference!

Sorry, everyone's got to start somewhere right. It's not that I'm not smart enough nor mechanically inclined enough. I just lack the experience and knowledge to diagnose it based on sound alone. The only way to aquire such knowledge is to jump in, not take it to the dealer.

Yeah, I don't know. I got on a creeper last night with a stethescope. Definitely louder underneath the truck. I put a socket on most of the downpipe nuts and couldn't tighten them at all. Put a wrench on the manifold bolts and couldn't budge those either. Not to say the downpipes aren't leaking(cause I know they are) but at least the nuts are tight.
I won't have time to replace the downpipe gaskets until June 19 or 20th maybe. I'll post back up with whatever I find.

Does sound like an exhaust leak. You could suck some seafoam into your intake and probably watch smoke pour out of your leak.

Evan that sounds gay in this thread:ack:

I replaced the downpipe gaskets yesterday. The tick is still there. No better, no worse, just exactly the same as before. Guess its on to the lifters.
