Sensationalist bullshit. That's a perfectly good place to fit a fuel tank on an off pavement vehicle, as strange as that may seem. It's easier to maintain and there is space to tuck things in. Changes in design don't mean the previous design was flawed, they only mean something was done in a different way.

Quite a few vehicles moved away from rear-mounted fuel tanks to get spare tires out of the way in a fight for luggage capacity in a more competitive market filled with soft-roaders.

Would we say that an original GTO is flawed, simply because GM vehicles were changed over time? Was the DII such a hellish driver-killer that Land Rover needed to create the LR3?

The classic Cherokee is one of the best vehicles with which Chrysler has been associated. What a load of crap.

Right, but this story is about the Grand Cherokee, and I wouldn't call it "one of the best" anything...

fwiw... my good old Cherokee had 21-gallon gas tank between the framerails, left of driveshaft, and even clearing the t-case.... The Wagoneer also has the tank in the same location, and, I believe, Land Cruisers as well.
The only thing worse than un-skid-plated gas tank in the rear is the spare tire in this location, and that's all three vehicles mentioned above had.

Interesting point. I had just brought it up to see what people might say. I really don't have an opinion either way.
