Jerry Can Mount?

Does anyone make or has anyone ever fabricated a jerry can mount that would fit on the rear spare tire mount (with the tire removed) of a D2? I have 285/75/16's and its starting to wear out my hinges and want to move the tire up to my roof rack. I know they make jerry can mounts for roof racks but really would like to get the tire off the back door. Mainly would be hauling water vs. gas in the cans and will most likely need that before the spare.

I thought having my tire on my roof rack was effin' sweet in high school, but then I realised how stupid I looked and how much of a pain it was to get it up there... Replace your hinges, they wear out without bigger tires.

In all seriousness, mounting a spare tire on the roof is not a good idea. A 285 weighs what? 100lbs?

Mounting it up there raises your center of gravity, it becomes a projectile in an accident, it could add to getting hung up on low limbs on the trail. It makes your MPG worse (not that it matters much with these trucks). It's a PITA to get up and down from there. It's just not preferable.

If you were on a long excursion and needed more than one spare, go ahead...mount a 2nd or 3rd tire on the roof...just don't do off camber stuff.

If you're worried about the hinges, they can be replaced. They also have swingaway tire carriers that are nice...expensive but nice.

Just take a look around and look at the tires mounted on roofs...maybe the occasional kid with a Jeep XJ (I was guilty of this back in the day). There's a reason people don't do it.

If you insist on mounting a spare on the roof, get a good rack that mounts to the gutter rails, grab a quadratec cherokee/grand cherokee magazine, and go nuts.

But, please don't.

I don't know do you guys not have gas stations where you live? I know they have gas station in VA but not sure about IL. But I've been wheeling on the east coast for over 20 years and have yet to need a jerry can or even see someone use one. I suppose if you live out west and do long range expedition type wheeling there might be a need for one.

Definitely not needed on the east coast unless you just want to look cool in your FJ Cruiser. It goes really well with a roof mounted spare tire and RTT.

correct-I got the jerry can(idea) after coasting on fumes on I-70 (in eastern Utah on way to Moab) most of that was ignorance but there weren't many options (fuel) in that area(10 yrs ago?) there are fuel stations in Illinois Landrover is now in Colorado (where the can actually has come in handy) nearest station to our cabin is 12 miles (open only during day) and not on any of my usual routes
