If you had to pick between the same job in the following locations, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Texas/Mexico Border, or a worse job in Norther Cal, what would you choose and why? All jobs pay the same amount of money, one is just much worse.

I'd vote OK. Cost of living is relatively low. The economy is stable and it's growing. OK City & the Tulsa areas have a lot to offer. You get all 4 weather seasons.

I cant say anything for MS, never been there.

Nor Cal would be much better as far as weather, better scenery, mountains.

You don't want to live on the TX/MX border. Or it depends where your talking about. Stay away from El Paso, Del Rio, Laredo. If you get closer to McAllen & Brownsville, it's somewhat better since you close to the gulf.

It's all about priorities and that varies person to person of course depending on your particular situation.

For me that would be easy. Northern CA.

I've always been of the school that I'd rather have a better environment around me that coincides with my lifestyle. Back in the day that was everything outdoors. Not to mention I'd rather live for the now then the future - living somewhere shitty to save up for the move to somewhere nice seemed odd. You just can't put a price on big mountains, nice rivers and big spaces of nothing but wilderness. I am not saying Northern CA has it all, but that area of the country has most of it. Not to mention I prefer to be around people with the same mind set. The area of the south you speak of is a far cry from that mind set - of course generalizing, but then again maybe you have a hankering for the big ladies. I dunno.

I lived in NJ when I first graduated from college. A beautiful area of NJ non the less (Far Hills), but I found myself driving to Maine and VT every other weekend (literally) to ski, bike and drink great beers. Within a month of deciding I needed to make a change, I was living in VT and very much enjoying the change with a pay cut.

All I had to do was take in the view from the top of Mount Mansfield every week in the winter to know I made the right choice back then.

I grew up in Mississippi. My parents live there. Every time I visit, I realize why I left. That state sucks more than you can imagine.

Anywhere that illegal immigration is an issue would be problematic. Not necessarily the immigrants, but public services and politics...

You know why Texas doesn't slide into the Gulf of Mexico? Because Oklahoma sucks. Oklahoma ranks up there with Nebraska, Kansas, and the Dakotas as places I'd never want to live. Landscape is way too boring.

I would move to Northern California. Been there, wish I could move back. Where I was was beautiful, temperate. The only problem is it's still California.

Matt,

The way you posed the questions shows that deep down in your heart you already know the answer...

Your job there might suck however, you're going to love the other 128 hours a week of your life.

If somebody said, Ill pay you $1,000,000 to shovel shit in steamboat springs, CO or I'll pay you $1,000,000 to sit on your ass in Manasquan, NJ...where do you think Im headed?

Yea, it'll be shitty but I'll be a millionaire in paradise.

I live in No CA. I'm 2 hrs from the ocean and San Francisco, an hour from sking or playing in Lake Tahoe. The politics suck and the taxes are nothing to brag about. The weather is great and they have not yet outlawed guns or wild women. I love it here. If you get away from the SF Bay area cost of living is not bad.

I thought my PCS move options sucked..

Hah. Worst part Is I have to switch to a different aircraft. The Cali option would pretty much ensure I don't fly manned ever again which has other implications for future jobs. It will only be 3-5 years. I don't know. there are greater outdoor things in proximity in Cali mountains, beaches, desert. Hmmm.

Mississippi or Oklahoma.

Screw California. The scenery is not worth the headache.

Texas is a great state and I've lived there, but the border is just too frustrating nowadays, the demographic isn't to everyone's taste, and your kids will be required to learn Spanish. Borderland Texas is rubbish, anyway. The rest of the state can be wonderful, though. Still, Oklahoma provides many of the same benefits.

Both Mississippi and Oklahoma have pretty unobtrusive firearm regulations, and that's of importance to me.

The end result would depend on how much land I could afford and where I had to afford it. I hate cities. If the same job put me in a city in one state, and the country in another, there isn't much of a choice.

Cheers,

Kennith

I think you might see the world a bit differently than others...

Im all for land and loose government but, not hermit in a shack surrounded by 30 acres of concertina wire type...you know what I mean.

The weather alone in Mississippi and the likes down there would drive most people to insanity. It makes the summers useless. Not only does the weather absolutely blow ass, but it's depressing as shit. People do absolutely nothing but eat and show up on Cops re-runs.

I spent a summer as a kid on the Gulf. We quickly bolted north for the next 15 summers.

There is a reason the cost of living is low in those areas.

How long would the job last?
That might have some relevance.
I think I could survive one Mississippi summer.
Not two.

Where does this 'great weather in NorCal' come from?

When I lived there it rained damned near nonstop from November through April. The Spring and Summer was nice but the winter sucked.

Do you want to fly (military) ever again? That's the real question you have to answer.

Four years ago, my best friend took a NATO post in Brussels that was supposed to be 2 years, ended up being 3. Prior to that, he was an F18 jockey. Hasn't flown since and won't again. He's got 3 years left (8 mo through a two year stint in Japan - bad timing), and is just biding his time until he hits the 20.

You're in the military. Everyplace is temporary until you get out.

As Kennith said, Texas isn't bad, but the boarder is very sketchy, especially with Mexico in near civil war. I'd probably choose OK or MS (depending where in MS). I'd have to give up too much anti-zombie equipment to live in CA.
