Due to the wet, blustering weather I'm moving pretty slow on putting my Series back together. Thought it might be fun to find out what everyone's favorite part of owning a Series truck is. I'll start, duh. :p

My favorite part of owning a Series is when all the neighborhood kids come up to me saying they could steal my truck since it's open (It's a soft top and I usually have the top off and didn't have the upper doors at the time). So I tell them to hop in. I ask them to tell me how they would start the truck. With the key switch on the far right of the truck and the starter button in the center dash they don't have a clue. Then I ask them if they know how to drive a truck with all the shifters sticking up out of the floor. They look at the 4 sticks in confusion (I include the parking brake just to add to their frustration). They promptly exit my vehicle and decide to be kids again by playing on the Rover jungle gym hanging from the hood sticks and jumping off the bumperettes.

I'm just doing my part turning wannabe hoodlums into good kids. :D

I would have to say the looks that the truck gets. Since it is the only one of its kind in town, and right hand drive to boot, when they see it, they look to the driver side, and see either the dog, or one of my sons and really do the double take. There I am, smiling from the driver seat, on the right, and then they tell me what a cool truck it is and how they like the older Rovers. The best one though, was the other day, when a brand spankin new Range Rover (supercharged) pulled up next to me at a light. The guy rolls his window down, and tells me how cool the truck is, and asks what is it???? I just smiled and said "It's the great-grandfather of the one you're driving", and pulled off, leaving him, at best, puzzled. Silly RR driver!!!!

As I've only had mine little less that 2 months I may have to have multipule answers! Yea it's cool getting the looks and the various thumbs up while driving around but knowing that I'm driving "the real thing", a rolling legend is what I think i'm diggin now the most.

I mainly like the looks I get in my Stage 1 when I keep up with traffic or pass people. Being able to throw my scooter in the back in case I break down is also nice, it's like a little Series 3 escape pod.

I like that when I drive it my whole mindset changes and I don't care at all how many people pass me or how bad they are driving!;)

It's the best therapy I have found if I've had a bad day.

Well even though mine isnt 'really' a series, my favorite thing is wheeling with my two boys ages 3 and 5. They both love "the green truck" and like to sit in it and pretend drive while I tinker away. The memories they will take with them from the weekends in the woods and camping with friends are worth every hour I put into it. Gordo

Gotta say the therapy of driving it.

You can't hear the radio, can't talk on the cell phone, so you're forced to just drive, which is a nice change. You can't be in a hurry either ... you're going too slow first off, and whenever you get where you're going there is bound to be somebody in the parking lot who wants to ask some questions.

And I'll enjoy all of these things again, when I get mine put back together :)

Pull up at a store and head inside. When you come out, there's someone standing there, just eyeing it. Pull up at the gas pump, and someone complements you on you old ride. Start it w/ a handcrank, and everyone in a parking lot watches.

No, I don't like the attention for myself, but, it's cool to see an old vehicle getting the attention. (I would imagine like dating a supermodel, lol....).

1. Mine's teaching me how to wrench.
2. It's an excuse to buy rover parts.
3. I love how they look.
4. It's an excuse to buy tools.

Got a cab recently. The driver was BSing with me and saw a Rangie. He told me a story about how he was in my neighborhood and saw a real land rover. I asked him if it was a SWB with aged Bronze Green paint. He said yes. He had seen my truck! What are the odds in a city the size of Chicago? I told him it was mine. He believed me when I showed him the truck in my garage...

While I do not technically count yet as I have not brought mine home, I bought it for many of the reasons listed here. When I had my TJ I loved driving around with the doors and top off. I would catch people in their sedans wishing they had something that open. I should have mine on the road by spring.:D :D

Its not a Heap....

My Marines call it my "Safari Truck" and think i should mount a machine gun in the back of it.

The attention it gets at stop lights.

Its simplicity.

Its complexity.

I can relate to what DiscoJen says. When I first got mine I lived in a pretty rough part of SouthEast Washington DC. A few friends mentioned the likelihood of the old beasty getting stolen. The truck had no functioning locks on it at all. The neighborhood kids used to climb all through it. I'd come home on a regular basis to find the doors swinging in the breeze and the head lights left on but other than that it was always right where I left it.

I love the fact that everywhere we go with the old series truck we make new friends. Plus for me it's therapeutic just to climb in, get in the series frame of mind, and just drive at what ever pace the old rover is comfortable with. On top of that I love going out on the trail with new jeeps, and other brands including newer rovers and surprising them with the capabilities of a truck that's older than most of the rigs and drivers that I wheel with.

I just like playing "brake pull roulette" because you never know what is going to happen when you hit the brakes.

I have to agree with the Therapy aspect. Even during the "drive while restore" continues (restore, more than drive!!), I can't express the feeling I get when I just tool it around the neighborhood in between the times it's NOT running. Let alone, the times it's left me stranded and I still have a :D waiting for rescue, priceless!

Mostly it is on the road because I keep it there. It reminds me of the times my dad or family members would work on their cars because that was what a man did, his own work.

Because it is a lot like me, a bit of a relic, and a little tough to deal with some times.

Like me, given the littlest bit of love and respect I will keep living up to my responsibilities until something falls off; like me, it will do things the newer brighter models can only imagine.

Because when I look out of the window and see it sitting there I feel better.

Dan;)

Standing in the parking lot at the bank when it is ZERO degrees outside while a guy crawls around asking questions about your truck and whether it is for sale.
