west of the city...
Holy crap! Try to point someone in the right direction, or offer an opinion based on experience, and it seems like most of the world is a friggin' expert on everything. As I approach the big Five-Oh, I find that I am becoming less and less tolerant of smart assed kids.
Rant over, just had to put this somewhere.
Have a great day!

Just like when you complain of an ache or pain. All of a sudden all your friends and co-workers have PHDs. "It could be this.""Sounds like it could be that.?
Or when customers tell me how to do my job that I have been doing for almost 25 years. "IT AIN'T MY FIRST DAY!" I don't tell you how to trade stocks because I'm not an expert. Don't tell me how to dispatch a flight unless you can calculate weight and balance, fuel burn, alternate landing, and read weather.

Then maybe you can tell me why I have to fly to Charlotte, NC, before I can get to Cancun from Phoenix.

shit man, they taught all that stuff in ground school. :p

(15 years later I have no idea how to use my e6-b flight computer. Hell, I can't even figure out the electronic Jebbsen version I bought at that time).

When you walk up to a fat police officer may I suggest you not treat him like a smart-ass kid?

Now, I'm starting to see cranky on the horizon for me - I'm 30, so no longer really a smartass kid... but this (former) smartass kid has had a great many moments dealing with grumpy older dudes twice my age who think they know it all but have been caught off guard by smart suggestions and ideas by yours truly. I've also spent plenty of time cleaning up the messes made by so-called "experts". That being said, I know how exasperating it can be to have something suggested by someone younger or substantially junior in the workplace, I've been there too (as I said, I'm 30, so not really wet behind the ears anymore). It can be hard to know when someone young is smart and knows a thing or two, but I'm finding its even harder to remain humble as I get older, especially if you're particularly good at something. ...not trying to tell anyone to be humble or anything, more just thinking out loud, and asking for advice on how to BE humble as I get older. I'll have to ask my old man about this, he's managed to remain incredibly humble despite being particularly intelligent and skilled in his field.

I sometimes come across as Mr. Smartypants, so have been working on this same area myself. What has helped when I hear a suggestion from an intern/rookie/coworker/person with unproven expertise is to separate the idea from the person. Judge the idea on its own merits. Think to yourself "If I came up with this idea would I think it was total crap or worth telling someone else?"

Luis...

Not aimed at you - but... When our local LR dealer service tech was telling me that it was justified to charge me $311 for a mis-diagnosis of electrical failure, his "selling point" was that the tech had 20 years of experience working on Land Rovers. At that time, GEMS was barely 6 years old; I've asked him how 14 years prior to GEMS mattered...

Sometimes, years on the job just don't matter.

Being a good judge of character helps. Also knowing when to keep your mouth shut. That's worked for me pretty well so far.
