I'm trying to find a wiring diagram for the front driving lamps for a 2002 Kalahari DII. They work intermittently (maybe 5% of the time) and I have no idea what is going on. I have ruled out the switch, ground, power supply, and the signal from the brights. This looks just like the factory OEM driving lamp wiring kit, anybody have a wiring diagram for that? How about a spare "black box" controller for the lights?

Take a look in the steering column for loose wires. I do not have a diagram; however, the factory kit number is STC 53196AA. You might be able to download the installation guide from ownerinfo.landrover to help identify which wires are in scope. I believe there is a plug with three wires in it on the turn signal side of the column. Make sure that connector is tight and you are getting 12v to the wire on the bottom of the plug when the hi beams are on. Also check the fuse and which should be mounted to the black box you referred to.

I looked under the steering column cover. no loose wires, in fact, no wires at all pertaining to the driving lamp circuit. After some digging, I believe the part # for the black box unit is VUB501690. I couldn't find any images though so I'm still not 100% sure.

Make sure this harness is seated correctly. The connector you are concerned with should have two wires leading from one terminal. Make sure this wire is getting +12v when the hi beams are on. Lake Bueller just remedied the same problem.

99 times out of a 100, it's the black box/control unit at fault - it's not really up to the job :(

You can't buy a replacement control unit on it's own, you have to buy a complete Accessory Wiring Kit.

Have a look at this link -

He had the same problem with the control unit - he's pictured exactly what's inside it

But more importantly, he shows you how to replace it with a proper relay and also how to modify the Binnacle Switch to a positive latching version, instead of the momentary push-push switch that comes with the kit.

Well I THOUGHT I had remedied the problem. I'm still experiencing some issues but only intermittently. I'll probably go the same route that Panzer did.

Both of my Discos have the factory driving lights and both sets work intermittently. I had one set fixed but they stopped working right away again. I just had the truck back at the dealer getting a new engine under warranty (whole other story) and had the same set of lights looked at again. Apparently there is a new wiring harness that replaces the old, crap one so that's probably the culprit for everyone else's issue. Mine was replaced with this new one but I haven't had a chance to test them out. Hopefully this new harness holds up.
