Any help would be appreciated. My key gets stuck in my 96 Disco. I can get it out but you really have to work it and I'm afraid it will get broken off in there soon. I have just started locking the door with the remote but then sometimes I forget to turn off the radio and have to jump it.
So other then a new ignition anyone know of a good fix?
Can I spray WD40 in the lock and if I do will this help?

Thanks Again,

Alan

Rob,

Sometimes when the gear selector is in "Park" but the thumb release hasn't "popped" all the way out, it won't release the key. This may not be the actual problem you're having but I would check here first as it might just be that simple. I've had this problem a couple times and now when I park, I make sure the thumb release has "popped" out before trying to remove the key.

its probably a combination of a worn key & worn ignition lock. I wouldn't use wd40 but go to the hardware store & have a new key made & purchase some graphite (lock lubricant)... These ignitions have a history of wearing out, but a new key & some lub will solve your problems for a while.

The lenght of the uncut shaft on the key is important. It has to be long enough to allow the key to be pushed into the lock before it can be turned far enough to remove. If you ahve recently changed key chains or had a new key made this may be the problem.

Alan's right - the ignition lock has an interlock solenoid that won't let you to pull the key out other than with gear selector in Park. You can pull the cover off the steering column, and push the solenoid shaft whichever way allows the key to come out. If it's only you who's driving the vehicle, and you don't care about the interlock mechanism, you can jam the solenoid in the unlocked position and disconnect it from the harness.

yes, changing the lock shouldn't take more than 20 minutes (assuming you have a complete lock assembly and a new key). The only bitch is the tamper-proof screws that hold the lock, so you have to get creative to get them out. Replace them with Allen screws afterwards.

You can (a) carry two keys, or (b) rekey the ignition cylinder.
I haven't found a non-destructive way to remove the cylinder from '95-'96 (don't know the other years') lock.

Peter I guess I work a little slower than you it took about an hour and a half and was really pretty easy to change the lock out.

Graphite worked like a charm. Really easy to work now. Is this a temporary fix? Will the graphite start to wear away at the innition?
