Guys I need help on were to start diagnosing a bad knocking sound. I have a 2002 D2 4.0 with sai and 103K miles. The head gasket, lifters, oil pump plus more parts were replaced at 97K. The knock is only when engine is warm and at idle. At first was intermittent, the knock would come and go sporadicly only a couple times a week. Now its there as soon as engine temp comes up. My temps stays around 196 with scan tool and my oil pressure is 20. Engine runs smooth and drives great no lose in power. Any help would be great. I posed a video for you to hear the knock, video makes it sound like a tick but it is loud. You can here it when in side the cab with air on and windows up. Knock is there only at idle and gose away when driving.
Thanks,

No sure what oil previous owner ran. Ive owned it only a couple months now. Did the oil change last week with T6 5-40 and Mobil one filter. I will post anorther video later. I'm installing an oil gauge now.

I had out-of-round piston slap in my '04 and that is definitely a different tick. Slow down you video by half and listen, sounds like a rocking chair, or rocker arms to me...but others here have vastly more engine experience than me.

I would try some plain old 15 w 40 and see if that makes a difference. my 99 doesn't like the 5 and 10 weight oils either. chances are this will fix your noise. it won't cost much to try.

Okay changed the oil to 15-40 no change in sound. Installed an oil pressure gauge hot oil idle is 12 and 46 at 2K rpms. Going to take it to a shop tomorrow and see what they say. Anyone use the Rover Doctor in Irvine CA?

Drain out a qt. of oil, add 1qt of ATF and drive around for about 15-20 minutes, Drain and fill with 15-40 Rotella T. See if that quiets it down.

I want to say that the Rover used/uses Bosch lifters, not too sure though. I have always had ticking with any vehicle that used the Bosch lifter. Mostly Audis and VW's, the only way to solve it it to replace them. Has something to do with the tiny ports for oil flow, they clog very easily. It can get really bad if you do a motor flush and all that crap breaks loose.

This is more like the overhead cam style of lifter but the procedure is the same.

According to the previous owner the lifters were replaced when the head gaskets were done about 6k ago.
But I don't know if the shop was lying to the previous owner (he was an elderly gentleman original owner).
Can lifters be changed with out tacking the heads off?
