Why would you ever put a 1/2 inch impact on a hub nut?

Because you can plug that socket onto a torque wrench to more accurately tighten your hub nut to factory spec. Although it would be interesting to see what would happen if you did tighten a hub nut with an air-powered impact wrench. Not on your own truck, of course.

To remove it quickly. I use the impact to unscrew bolts more than anything else. Saves time and monotony of ratcheting.
