here are three of the projects i have going on now
first is a 6.5x55 octagon barreled mauser project with a mauser banner receiver. as soon as the barrel is indexed i'll start inletting it to the stock. triggeruard is a sculptered, hinged, lever release & i'm putting a keplinger single set trigger on it.
i may swap the recever for a dwm gew98 that i have & use the banner recever on another project because i have a curved banner butplate that matches the receiver but is to large for this stock.

the next is a 50's style mauser target rifle in .220 swift
i'm still waiting on the barrel to arrive it's shown with a junker barrel.
it has a early bishop benchrest stock & a weaver K6 with a litschert targeteer 12X booster. it going to be a single shot so i welded up the floorplate with flat bar.

and here's one more, its a yugo captured mod98 that was in a beat up czech vz-24 stock when i got it. i had a few spare parts lying around & decided to do a quickie sporter build.
after i started inletting it to the stock the rear sight looked to big so i shortened it to only go out to 600 yards instead of 2000 & cut the step on the barrel back to match the new sight. i srtill have to finish fitting the buttplate & sand & finish the stock. i'll use some of my top secret patina dip to age the metal when i reblue it. it has a straight bolt in the pics but i have a curved bolt that clears the sideplates on the stock that i'm going to use if it will headspace with it

My winter project

Here's my Reminton 03-A3 sporter project. Right now it's a working project gun but this winter it'll be sent out for refinishing. It's a Remington circa 1943 and it a tack driver. I plan to have the machining marks on the barrel smoothed out, barrel and action bead blasted, polished and blued. I'm not sure how I want to go about refinishing the stock. It looks good as is but I'd like for it to be a bit darker and glossier. I'm working on a 10/22 sporter stock right now and am having good luck with tru-oil. I've got 15 coats on it now and it is really starting to get glossy. I'm not sure how to go about stripping the 03-A3 stock without messing up the checkering. It had an ugly swift scope on it but I just picked up a VX-III Leupold for $300 direct from the factory and I think it fits the rifle much better.

that 03 is off to a good start, looks like a talley bolt handle. i'm still trying to decide what to do with one of my one of my 03's that was bubba'ed, i'm thinking national match stlye but chambered in 6.5x55
to strip the stock without damaging the checkering you'll need to know what the original finish was, oil, varnish, poly, etc. with the right solvent you should be able to dissolve the original finish. try wiping the stock with a rag soaked in lacquer thinner, if that doesn't work try denentured alcohol, then acetone, etc. forbys furniture refinsher with 0000 steel wool also works well.
for darkening the wood i would run like hell from the hardware store wood stains, alcohol based stains are much better & cheaper. i use rit clothing dye mixed with denentured alcohol, the ratio is a table spoon of dye to an ounce of alcohol.
if you going to use an oil finish a couple of coats a boiled linseed oil will darken the stock a little & then it can be followed up with tung oil or tru-oil.
i only use stain on military stocks not on my sporter stocks & i'm not a fan of tru-oil i prefer tung oil, raw linseed oil & boiled linseed oil. you can get an exceptional finish with boiled or raw linseed oil, the trick is gettintg the first coat to oxidize properly before adding any more coats of oil.

Nice looking rifles fella's!

Here's my custom Sprigfield 1911. Began life as a Mil-Spec, but about the only stock parts left now are the frame, slide, barrel and grips.

I'd like to build a commander sized 1911 from the ground up over the next several months, but I think it might be time to give my Rover a little attention...In one ear I hear someone whispering, "lockers" and the other ear I hear, "custom commander".
