Anyone have experience with these trucks? Looking for something more reliable to daily drive. Need a wagon and 4wd/AWD or FWD. $25k territory.

Other considerations are a new Passat, Subaru Legacy GT, 4Runner, used LC and Grand Cherokee.

The obvious choice would be an LR3 or DII, but it'll be a tough sell to the check writer.

I've been watching the LR3s on ebay. The cheapest buy it now was 16,750 for a 2005 with 56,000+ miles. my wife wants one but it will be next year sometime before we can get one.

Id get a 07 and older Land Cruiser or LX470 over the GX if your interested in the lux Toyota market.

If your going that route, buy a sequoia... Bigger and cheaper.

true, for looks id go with LCruiser though, they stuck with the body style for years until they went with the modern bubble style this year, but the new does have the 5.7 380hp in it derived from the Tundra and IFS front and year. It lost the solid rear axle with the E-locker

I really like the previous generation LC's. The 2008+ or whatever are fugly. That said LC's are priced way to high if you ask me. WAY WAY WAY too high.

My friends mom has a GX470. Personally not a huge fan. They're ok but I think they're ugly and look like mitsubishis or something cheap. The interior isn't anything to drewl over either, typical lexus blahhhness. Don't get the tan leather because with it you get the really light colored carpet which just gets filthy. I also find the way the 3rd row seats fold up to be annoying- flipping to the sides of the car and blocking the rear side windows.

I would say get an LR3 instead. They're big but not too big, I love the simplistic interior, the panoramic roof, and the visibility. It'll be much cheaper than the lexus and you can use that saved money for repairs or an extended warranty. I've seen LR3's at my local dealer for under $20k with less than 50,000 miles and very low 20's with less than 40,000 miles.

Don't buy a VW. My mom, family members, and family friends have owned passats and have had nothing but issues with them. Yes, they're fun to drive and built very well, but everything is extremely expensive to fix and unlike a rover everything is built so tight its impossible to fix anything. For example, you have to remove the battery and air intake to change the passanger side headlight. Its just ridiculous. If you do get one get the V6 version, its easier to get at the oil filter (the old 1.8T has the oil filter in what looks like an inacessable spot, not sure if the new 2.0t is the same but I am guessing).

Subaru Legacy is a great car. I know a few people with them and they couldn't be happier.

4Runner- not a fan. Crappy interior, ugly exterior, buy an LR3. Reliable car though.

Grand Cherokee- you can get them dirt cheap since SUVs and chyrslers aren't selling. Not a fan of the 05+ -they seem cheaper than the 04 and earlier models and I've heard they have poor visibility, they also look like crap. We have an 03 and a 99 both of which have been good. That said the 99 has the typical chrysler AC and Tranny issues and the 03 has had the typical chrysler AC problems too. I have not driven the 05+ but the 04 and ealier have a super squishy ride that I don't like. The good option they do have are awesomely powerful V8's and quadradrive.

I say LR3

I had a 2003 GX for 4 years.

Pro's:
-Very smooth engine and drivetrain
-Very reliable (no duh)
-good offroad with a few quirks
-good handling and manueverability for a ladderframe and solid rear axle
-dealer give you loaners for anything
-lots of head-room, 2nd row leg room
-Mark Levinson Stereo is awesome
-17" wheels
-love the rear barn-door

Con's
-Rear air suspension is always bottoming-out
-Offroad capabilities are below the LR3's, and quirky
-third-row seats are a pure joke, most owners use them as furniture for the kid's room
-Shift-gate is ala John Deere, and makes manual shifting near impossible
-Driver's seat is a little skimpy on leg-room if you are over 6'2" or have a 33" inseam.
-paint is not as durable as the LR3's
-dealer's are absolute bandits. You must have the manual with you when having any service work performed. Dealer replaced the tranny, radiator, and rear diff fluid @ 11K miles, when I had my wife bring it in for its 1 year oil change. They did all the above assuming that we used it to tow boats through unpaved trails, during the summer, in Death Valley. I had to point out to the SM that he should first check the customers truck before espousing this BS, as our GX did not even having a tow package - seriously.
-it has no soul, and lacks character; albeit, it is a really good truck.

While the handling is more ponderous, and the powertrain/drivetrain is more course, I strongly prefer my LR3. Prices are falling precipitously. I would try for a CPOed 2006.
