Air bubble, bleed it out
Exhaust gas, you're screwed
Plugged heater core, replace. That'll teach you to use headgasket in a bottle
Duct servo, replace
Climate controller, replace

He never said he used any type of head gasket in a bottle. Stop being counterproductive jackass. Yes you posted some really good reasons for his coolant system. No reason to be an ass, when someone is asking for help.

Look to bleed fully, but if that doesnt work with full coolant, could well be blocked heater matrix. Happened to me last year and it would not clean from the firewall side, so had to have dash pulled to get to matrix and have it replaced...then nice heat again. Thats an all day job.

Cheers

My heat is very sporadic and only "works" when I am driving.

Any thoughts as to why?

Like people have posted make sure you are not low on coolant. Top it off and let it run, there are two hoses on the passenger side that are used for heat. Check to make sure they are warm to hot. Also a flush may help but create more problems like leaks etc. Also is your climate control under the radio is bad . Just a thought. The best thing to do is a pressure test just to make sure you do not have a coolant leak.

The sporadic nature of what you describe suggests and air pocket requiring a better bleeding of the system.
I would also toss in a new thermostat since it is a fairly easy thing to do and inexpensive (<$15).

If headgasket in a bottle has been used, try disconnecting the heater core hoses and flush hard with your garden hose. Ive had good luck purging them that way.

What if it's doing that but the coolant level is good? Air pocket maybe?

Could have an air pocket, but the only time I've seen DII's that have a full expansion tank and still have air in the heater core is when the block is cracked. I've seen this on three DII's. I don't know if they had heating issues, but they definitely made the water running through the dash noise.

If the heater matrix was blocked then he wouldn't have heat when driving or at idle. You don't have to pull the dash to replace the matrix.

It might be cheap and easy, but why just throw parts at it for no reason?

Not on a disco 2 its not that easy or cheap

Are they expensive now? Last time I bought one through Land Rover it was under $15.
