Garrett in Montana? Good deal. I may be a day late and a buck short, but here goes...

Make it down to West Yellowstone during the week. You picked a rather crap time to go, most of the locals are about ready to head back to school. So, everyone is usually getting their last run through the park in about now. Get your day permit and go fish the Firehole river. A bit tough getting to as you have to mind your step through the steam pots, etc., but well worth it. The fish aren't trophy class, but they fight like fish 5x their size. Get there early, the fishing is good...and popular. Besides, there are very few places on this earth where you can land a trout within 100 yards of a herd of Bison. Truly epic.

If you got some more time, head out the South Entrance from Yellowstone and head through Teton National Park. Absolutely incredible drive, with plenty of wildlife sightings and enough views of Grand Teton to make your shutter smoke. Make it down into Jackson Hole, pony up at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar for a drink, and leave before you decide to eat (the food sucks and is way overpriced). Head on over to Jackson Hole Brewing Co. about 250 yards away and enjoy some great brews, laid back atmosphere, and much better food. If you're feeling touristy, make sure you get your pic taken under the antler arch.

And, if you're really in the mood for a drive, head East out of Jackson to Idaho Falls. Give me a ring and I'll show you around. First beer is on me.

Here's one I took at Glacier on August 10, 2003. That year was the first time they had large scale evacuation of the park due to wildfires. Very nasty.

September is definitely a better time to see the park. come in through the northeast entrance, less traffic. far fewer people at that time too.

That's right, Garrett, you do have PA roots. Plenty of classic flyfishing there...

Have fun out west.

yeh that is one thing i miss about PA now that i am in VA. the streams are amazing and they are EVERYWHERE. you can't go very far without passing a nice trout stream. Penns Creek is probably the most well known. my GFs parents have a place right on the stream and they are active fly fisherman.
Joe H. is the "other" Joe at PSU.

i think i might hold off and head to Yellowstone when i am back in Sept. thanks for the tips and i will refer back to them when do go.

the fire that started the other day has now consumed 15,000 acres. it smells like a campfire everywhere around town.

so i am coming back out here in late September and was thinking of flying my GF out here the last day i am working, so we can take a ride into Yellowstone.

any of you folks know of any cool inns to stay in?

i also thought about having her fly into Kalispell and cruise back up to Whitefish and Glacier. maybe head up to Flathead and Sir Isaac Lodge in the park. i'd have to drive up to Whitefish from Livingston/Bozeman or just have her fly into Bozeman and drive up together to Whitefish.

not 100% sure what i want to do. would like to do this in just a few days.

Garrett,

If you're going up to Glacier, try Polebridge area for a funky little community atmosphere. Also, Kintla Lake, north of Polebridge, is very beautiful: remote mountain setting that truly reminded me of photos of the Swiss Alps, plus a nice little campground and lots of good hiking. Look out for the bears, very active this time of year. Also, Sperry Chalet and Granite Park Chalet are very nice, if you can get into them now. Usually need reservations well in advance.
