Once my tires wear out i'm looking to upgrade to a locker setup for the front and rear, w/ 4.11 gearing and 285/75's. i was considering a detroit F&R just based on the principal of the ratcheting mechanism, it just makes good sense. I've done searches about the different locker setups out there, and just wanted some good opinions to make my decision.

You'll want to stay away from a Detroit in the front. It'll make steering a PITA and really stress the CVs.

The standard on Disco's are Detroit rear and trutrac front. If you go with detroit in back it would be wise to upgrade axles too. And with 285's more stress. The DII's also do well with trutracs front and back, that with CDL and TC you are very capable. Other's will chime in voting for ARBs front and back. They are fine too but you will want to upgrade front axles CVs and back axles. It all depends on what you really will be doing with your truck. I would advise a call to Bill at Great Basin Rovers. Tell him what you have, how you wheel it (or plan to), and listen to his advise.

Cheers,

Mike

forget about a detroit in the front, you have a fulltime 4 wheel drive system, so it's not going to work for you. with any gear/locker mod, plan on hd axle and front cv's. I broke 3 front cv's running a 285/75 with dual TT's. Stupid not to, it only a matter of time before you break something

a good set for a D2, with working TC is TT's F/R. that's what i ran for 4 years...
a better set up is a TT/DT...
a even better set-up would be dual arb's...

here's a price break out:
700 for rear axles
1000 for front cv's
650 for a TT
675 for a Detroit
800 for a arb, also need air source, 200
install kits, 150
extra shit 200

If you go the ARB route youre looking at around $5000ish
Compressor - $170
Locker w/Gears - $1750x2
Axles - $1700

And thats if you do the install yourself...

wow... i never knew so much went into just locking up the axels. i'm definately going to consider the HD cv's and axels, but would i have to if i opted to go to a 255/85... due to the narrower width, would that put less stress on the axels and cv's? ... worth it or no?

what's the best tire size then, in your opinion..

I'd go with the 285's...but if your in a lot of mud the 255's would be a little better...

I second that... 255s may yield better gas mileage as well. I would start with heavy duty axles and CVs F&R wheel it... then go the ARB route.
